An Organ Donation Information Desk was set up at a blood donation camp held at G. S. Amonkar Vidya Mandir, Mapusa, as part of an awareness initiative aimed at encouraging people to consider organ and whole-body donation.
The desk was facilitated by Mr Gabriel Pereira, Organ Donation Ambassador from the MOHAN Foundation, during the blood donation drive organised by New Goa Educational Trust’s G. S. Amonkar Vidya Mandir, Mapusa, in collaboration with Loving Hearts Goa and the North Goa District Hospital Blood Bank.
Around 23 Units of Blood Collected
The blood donation camp commenced at 9:30 a.m. and continued until 12:30 p.m., with approximately 23 units of blood collected during the drive.
Following his blood donation, Gabriel Pereira interacted with donors and highlighted the importance of regular blood donation. He also used the opportunity to explain the significance of organ and whole-body donation and how an individual’s decision to donate can make a meaningful difference to the lives of others.
During the awareness interaction, Gabriel shared that one blood donation has the potential to save up to three lives, organ donation can potentially save up to eight lives, and tissue donation can enhance the lives of up to fifty people.
Whole-Body Donation as an Act of Selfless Service
A noteworthy example came from one of the blood donors, Mr Vasudev, who had already volunteered for whole-body donation through the MOHAN Foundation.
His completed documentation had been submitted to Goa Medical College, demonstrating his commitment to selfless service and helping others even beyond his lifetime.
Awareness Material Distributed
Approximately 35 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) flyers on organ donation were distributed among donors and attendees at the camp.
The initiative also encouraged participants to consider pledging their organs. Two teachers expressed their commitment by taking pledge cards during the programme.
The awareness desk provided an opportunity to connect the act of blood donation with the broader message of donation and the potential impact that individuals can make through organ, tissue and whole-body donation.
Appreciation for Support
At the conclusion of the programme, Gabriel Pereira thanked Smt. Mohini C. Halarnkar, Headmistress of G. S. Amonkar Vidya Mandir, and Mr Mark D’Souza of Loving Hearts Goa for their support and for providing the MOHAN Foundation with an opportunity to participate in the blood donation drive.
The initiative highlighted the importance of creating greater public awareness about organ and whole-body donation and encouraging more people to make informed decisions about pledging to donate.
