Goa’s tourism sector has received a major boost with Union Home Minister Amit Shah approving the rollout of the Fast Track Immigration – Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP) in the state.
Goa Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte announced the development following his meetings with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi, where discussions were held on improving tourism infrastructure, connectivity and policy initiatives for Goa.
The FTI-TTP will enable seamless immigration processing through automated biometric-enabled e-gates at Goa’s airports, significantly reducing waiting times for passengers.
Faster Immigration, Better Passenger Experience
The programme, already operational at select airports across India, allows registered travellers to complete immigration formalities quickly through a technology-driven process.
According to Minister Khaunte, the initiative will:
- Improve travel convenience for Indian passengers, including Goan diaspora members, students, professionals and seafarers.
- Encourage more travellers to use Goa as an entry and exit point.
- Strengthen Goa’s position as an international tourism gateway.
- Prepare the state for future expansion of the programme to foreign nationals.
Welcoming the approval, Minister Rohan Khaunte said that faster immigration and improved airport experiences would directly benefit Goa’s tourism economy and enhance the state’s competitiveness.
Tourism Reforms Proposed to Strengthen Goa’s Global Position
During his meeting with the Union Home Minister, Khaunte also proposed several measures to improve international tourism arrivals, including:
- Extension of Visa-on-Arrival facilities to Goa.
- Regular anonymised Bureau of Immigration arrival data for better tourism planning.
- Introduction of a Digital Nomad Visa to attract remote workers and freelancers.
These proposals aim to increase visitor stays, support Goa’s workation ecosystem and improve international tourism outreach.
Focus on Air Connectivity and New Tourism Opportunities
In his meeting with Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Khaunte discussed strategies to improve domestic and international air connectivity.
Key areas highlighted included:
- Expanding international scheduled flights beyond traditional markets.
- Enhancing bilateral air service arrangements.
- Increasing wide-body aircraft operations.
- Improving connectivity from Tier-II and Tier-III Indian cities.
- Prioritising Goa in airline network planning.
New Tourism Infrastructure Push
The meetings also reviewed ongoing tourism infrastructure projects in Goa, including:
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Digital Museum at Ponda.
- Porvorim Town Square.
- Swadesh Darshan Coastal Circuit projects.
- Rural Tourism Circuit connecting Porvorim–Pomborpa–Harvalem.
Additional proposals included developing a plug-and-play concert ecosystem, strengthening cruise tourism through Mormugao Port and creating employment-generating tourism infrastructure.
Goa’s Vision for Future Tourism
Minister Khaunte highlighted that Goa’s tourism strategy has expanded beyond the traditional beach tourism model through initiatives focused on:
- Wellness tourism
- Hinterland experiences
- Eco-tourism
- Culinary tourism
- Adventure tourism
- Monsoon tourism
- Workation tourism
He said the focus is to position Goa as one of India’s most connected, accessible and future-ready tourism destinations.
The approval of FTI-TTP is expected to further enhance Goa’s visitor experience while supporting the state’s ambition to become a leading global tourism hub.
