Panaji, July 28: The Goa Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) has urged the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) to undertake the redevelopment of the iconic Dona Paula Jetty on a war footing while recommending the introduction of a Roll-On/Roll-Off (Ro-Ro) ferry service between Dona Paula and Mormugao Harbour.
The recommendations were submitted during a meeting between a GCCI delegation and GTDC Chairman Shri Kedar Naik.
The GCCI delegation included Shri Chandrakant Gawas, Chairman of the GCCI Logistics Committee, Shri Sanjay Amonkar, Director General, Smt. Ambika Kamat Dhakankar, Deputy Director, and Shri Sanket Kaskar, Foreign Trade Officer.
Concern Over Redevelopment Delays
During the meeting, GCCI highlighted the importance of completing the redevelopment project within strict timelines. The Chamber pointed out that the Dona Paula Jetty had remained closed for nearly five years before reopening in 2023 and cautioned against prolonged disruptions that could adversely affect local vendors, taxi operators, and the hospitality sector.
The delegation urged GTDC to ensure contractors adhere to fixed deadlines to facilitate the project’s timely completion.
Proposal for Ro-Ro Ferry Service
One of GCCI’s major recommendations was the introduction of a Roll-On/Roll-Off (Ro-Ro) ferry service connecting Dona Paula Jetty with Mormugao Harbour.
According to GCCI, the proposed service would significantly enhance Goa’s tourism appeal by offering scenic coastal transportation while also providing commuters with a faster alternative to road travel, thereby easing traffic congestion.
World-Class Infrastructure and Accessibility
The Chamber also recommended the development of modern public infrastructure at the jetty, including:
- Clean drinking water facilities
- Well-maintained public conveniences
- Designated pedestrian pathways
- Improved lighting
- Clear directional signage
GCCI further stressed the need for universal accessibility through ramps for senior citizens and differently-abled visitors, along with organised and aesthetically planned spaces for local vendors.
GTDC Assures Support
Responding positively to the suggestions, GTDC Chairman Shri Kedar Naik assured the delegation that the recommendations would be examined thoroughly and that timely completion of the redevelopment project would receive due emphasis.
He also assured GCCI that the Chamber would be actively consulted in future planning initiatives aimed at strengthening Goa’s tourism and trade infrastructure.
Reaffirming its commitment, GCCI stated that it will continue working closely with the state government and tourism authorities to safeguard local livelihoods while enhancing Goa’s position as a world-class tourism destination.
