World Cup 2026 Kicks Off in Mexico City with Shakira, Spectacle — and Protests

Mexico City — The 2026 FIFA World Cup began in dramatic fashion at the historic Estadio Azteca as fans gathered to witness a colourful opening ceremony and Mexico’s 2-0 win over South Africa.

The stadium staged a star-studded show featuring performances from global pop icon Shakira, Colombia’s J Balvin, Afrobeats star Burna Boy and Latin pop artist Danny Ocean. Fher Olvera of Maná performed the classic “Oye Mi Amor,” and performers wore indigenous dress and gold-themed costumes while carrying giant golden footballs — a visual celebration of Mexico’s cultural heritage. Announcers welcomed the world: “Bienvenida a México. Welcome to Mexico,” underscoring the tournament’s themes of diversity and unity.

Inside the packed 82,000-seat arena, supporters in colourful outfits and Mexico’s green, white and red cheered as the host nation began its campaign with a confident 2-0 victory. Fans described excitement and optimism, with many saying the experience outweighed earlier hassles.

However, the opening night was not without tension. Outside the Azteca, clashes erupted when nearly 200 hooded individuals broke away from larger protest groups estimated at around 800 people. Police responded, and authorities reported the situation was brought under control after brief violence that forced temporary shutdowns of nearby metro stations.

Protests in and around the city included groups drawing attention to long-standing domestic issues, such as demonstrations by teachers and families of those missing in Mexico’s drug war. Organisers and marchers used the global spotlight to highlight grievances even as the tournament proceeded.

Mexico is co-hosting the 2026 World Cup with the United States and Canada, each hosting opening events of their own. As the tournament moves forward, officials say security measures will remain in place to protect players, fans and visitors while organisers balance celebration with vigilance.
