Hovyo Selected for Waves International Film Festival, Showcasing Goa’s Fading Folk Heritage

In a proud achievement for Goa and student filmmakers, Hovyo has been officially selected for the prestigious Waves International Film Festival.

The documentary, created by students of St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa Mass Communication and Journalism department, explores Goa’s traditional oral folk songs known as “Hovyo” and their deep-rooted cultural significance.

The film sheds light on one of Goa’s fading oral traditions, historically sung by women during wedding rituals and daily life. Through extensive field research, expert interviews, and documentation of folk artists, the documentary captures the cultural, social, and historical importance of preserving this unique heritage.

At a time when many traditional art forms are disappearing, the documentary highlights the urgent need to safeguard Goa’s intangible cultural heritage and celebrate the voices that continue to keep these traditions alive.

Director Tanisha Pawar described the selection as a proud milestone in bringing wider recognition to Goa’s rich folk legacy.

The core team behind the documentary includes Tanisha Pawar (Director), Loukik Avasare, Manoj Rathod, Vaibhavi Joshi, and Vibha Betkar.

Their achievement marks an inspiring moment for young creators using cinema as a platform to preserve and celebrate regional culture.
