Goa Hosts High-Level CME Workshop on Cancer Genetics & Counselling

A high-level Continuing Medical Education (CME) workshop on Cancer Genetics and Counselling was organised in Goa, bringing together leading experts to discuss the evolving role of genetics in modern oncology. The programme, hosted by the Gokarma Oncology Association in collaboration with Tata Memorial Hospital, was held at the International Centre Goa.

The half-day academic session witnessed participation from oncologists, genetic specialists, and healthcare professionals who deliberated on the increasing importance of genetic testing and counselling in cancer diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Experts highlighted that India reports nearly 14 lakh new cancer cases every year, with approximately 3 per cent linked to hereditary causes. These cases are often associated with germline mutations in key cancer-related genes such as BRCA1, BRCA2, MLH1, MSH2, TP53, and APC.

Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Shekhar Salkar, President of the Gokarma Oncology Association, emphasised the transformative role of genetics in cancer care. He noted that early identification of hereditary cancers through genetic testing, combined with timely counselling, can significantly improve patient outcomes and enable preventive healthcare strategies.

The scientific sessions featured eminent faculty from premier institutions including Tata Memorial Hospital, Manipal Hospital Goa, and Goa Medical College, among others. Discussions focused on genetic counselling pathways, guidelines for testing in breast and colorectal cancers, hereditary cancer syndromes, and advancements in targeted therapies such as PARP inhibitors for ovarian cancer.

A key highlight of the programme was an interdisciplinary panel discussion on integrating genetic testing and counselling into clinical practice. Specialists from medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, radiology, and genetics shared case-based insights, emphasising the need for structured systems to incorporate genetic services into routine healthcare workflows.

The workshop also forms part of the outreach initiative of the Cancer Genetics Clinic at Tata Memorial Hospital, aimed at expanding access to genetic counselling and screening services across India, including Goa. The initiative seeks to strengthen early detection mechanisms and promote personalised cancer care approaches.

The event saw active participation from healthcare professionals across the state, reflecting a growing awareness of genetics-driven oncology. It concluded with a networking session that encouraged collaboration and knowledge exchange among participants dedicated to advancing cancer care in the region.
