FC Goa Thrash Punjab FC to Take Commanding Lead in RFDL Semi-Final

FC Goa put on an impressive display to secure a commanding victory over Punjab FC in the first leg of the Reliance Foundation Development League semi-final. The Gaurs showcased resilience, tactical discipline, and attacking flair to take a strong advantage into the return leg.

The match began with Punjab FC asserting early dominance, controlling possession for much of the opening 30 minutes. Despite the pressure, FC Goa remained composed, maintaining a compact defensive structure and patiently waiting for their opportunity to strike.

The breakthrough came in the 35th minute when a cleverly executed short corner caught the opposition off guard. Asher Rodrigues rose above the defence to head the ball into the net, giving FC Goa a crucial lead heading into half-time.

The second half saw an increase in intensity, with both teams pushing forward in search of goals. FC Goa doubled their advantage in the 54th minute when Prachit Gaonkar saw his effort take a decisive deflection, looping over the goalkeeper.

Moments later, Asher Rodrigues was brought down inside the penalty area, earning a spot-kick for the hosts. Akash Konsam Singh stepped up and calmly converted in the 58th minute to make it 3-0.

FC Goa continued to dominate and sealed the emphatic victory in the 68th minute, with Ismail finishing off a well-coordinated team move to add a fourth goal.

Defensively, Lionel Daryl Rymmei played a vital role in maintaining a clean sheet, producing a series of crucial saves to deny Punjab FC and ensure a flawless performance at the back.

With a four-goal advantage, FC Goa head into the second leg with confidence. The return fixture is scheduled for April 15 at the SAG Athletic Stadium in Bambolim, where the Gaurs will look to seal their place in the final in front of their home supporters.
