Exclusive: Mohini Brought Out a More Carefree, Uninhibited Side of Me, Says Yami Gautam on Nayyi Navelli

Yami Gautam Dhar is all set to entertain audiences with her upcoming film Nayyi Navelli, a fantasy family entertainer directed by Balaji Mohan. Ahead of its theatrical release on October 16, the actor has opened up about her character, Mohini, describing the role as an opportunity to explore a lighter, more spontaneous and playful side of herself.

Set against the backdrop of a chaotic household in Meerut, the film follows Mohini, a newly married woman whose arrival initially brings peace and harmony to her new family. However, the seemingly perfect daughter-in-law soon becomes the subject of suspicion when her brother-in-law begins to wonder whether she might actually be a daayan (witch).

For Yami, bringing Mohini to life meant stepping into a character who thrives on humour, mischief and unexpected reactions.

โ€œI think audiences will see a side of me that is lighter, more spontaneous and a lot more playful,โ€ Yami said. She explained that Mohini’s comedy and physicality gave her the freedom to loosen the control actors often maintain while performing and respond more naturally to the situations unfolding on screen.

โ€œThereโ€™s much more comedy, mischief and physicality in Mohini, and she gave me the freedom to let go of some of that control that you naturally have as an actor and just respond to whatโ€™s happening in the moment. That was very refreshing for me,โ€ she added.

Music and Dance Add to Mohini’s Playful Personality

Dance was another enjoyable aspect of the film for Yami. She credited composer G V Prakash Kumar’s music and choreographer Vijay Ganguly’s work for helping her capture Mohini’s infectious energy and playful spirit.

โ€œThe dancing was another amazing experience. G V Prakash Kumarโ€™s music has such a playful, infectious quality, and Vijay Gangulyโ€™s choreography really brought that out. I got to let loose and really enjoy myself, which was a lot of fun,โ€ she said.

The combination of comedy, movement and music appears to have offered Yami an opportunity to explore a different performance style, allowing her to embrace the character’s spontaneity.

Trusting Instincts to Bring Out the Humour

Yami also spoke about Mohini’s instinctive sense of humour, explaining that the character’s unexpected reactions are an important part of what makes her entertaining.

โ€œI also think Mohini has a very instinctive sense of humour. A lot of her reactions are unexpected, and sometimes the funniest moments come from simply trusting that instinct and not overthinking it. That was something I really enjoyed exploring,โ€ she said.

Reflecting on the experience, Yami expressed hope that audiences would enjoy discovering this new dimension of her screen persona.

โ€œI feel like Mohini brought out a much more carefree, uninhibited side of me, and I hope audiences have fun discovering that side too!โ€ she added.

Directed by Balaji Mohan, Nayyi Navelli is produced under the banners of Amazon MGM Studios and Colour Yellow Productions. The film also features Adinath Kothare, Mita Vashisht, Sonal Jha and Sunita Rajwar, among others.

With its blend of fantasy, family drama and comedy, the film promises audiences a glimpse of Yami Gautam in a refreshingly playful role when it arrives in theatres on October 16.
