Goa All-Rounder Chigurupati Venkata Named in India U-19 ODI Squad for Australia Series

Panaji: Goa all-rounder Chigurupati Venkata has been named in India’s Under-19 ODI squad for the upcoming home series against Australia Under-19, marking another major milestone in the young cricketer’s rapidly progressing career.

The 18-year-old’s selection comes after an impressive run in domestic age-group cricket and a strong showing during India’s recent Under-19 tour of Sri Lanka.

Australia Under-19’s tour of India will feature three One-Day Internationals and two Multi-Day matches, giving Venkata another opportunity to establish himself in India’s youth cricket setup.

Impressive domestic season

Venkata earned his latest India call-up after delivering consistent performances with both bat and ball during the previous domestic season.

Across four major domestic age-group tournaments, the Goa all-rounder claimed 49 wickets and scored 380 runs, underlining his value as a genuine all-rounder.

He also played a crucial role in Goa’s journey to the quarterfinals of the Cooch Behar Trophy, where he picked up 26 wickets and contributed 224 runs.

His performances have steadily strengthened his reputation as one of Goa cricket’s promising young talents.

Strong showing in Sri Lanka

Venkata had earlier been selected for India’s Under-19 Multi-Day squad for the tour of Sri Lanka.

The young all-rounder made a significant impact during the tour, including an impressive five-wicket haul in the second match of the series.

His latest inclusion in the ODI squad indicates that the selectors continue to view him as an important part of India’s Under-19 system.

Australia U-19 series schedule

The three-match ODI series against Australia Under-19 will be played in Rajkot on:

  • September 18
  • September 21
  • September 23

The first Multi-Day fixture will also take place in Rajkot from September 27 to 30.

The second Multi-Day match is scheduled to be held in Ahmedabad from October 5 to 8.

The series will provide India’s emerging players with an important international test against one of the strongest youth cricket teams in the world.

Goa Cricket Association hails selection

The Goa Cricket Association congratulated Venkata on his selection, describing the call-up as a proud moment for Goa cricket.

Goa Cricket Association President and former Goa Ranji player Mahesh Dessai said Venkata’s selection was the result of consistent performances and hard work.

“His performances over the past season have been outstanding, and his ability to contribute with both bat and ball has rightly earned him this opportunity. This is a reward for his hard work and consistent performances, and we are confident that he will make the most of this opportunity,” Dessai said.

GCA Secretary Tulsidas Shetye also praised the young cricketer’s discipline and commitment.

“His performances in domestic cricket and on the Sri Lanka tour have demonstrated his ability to perform at a high level. His selection for the ODI squad is another important step in his development, and we hope he continues to work hard, grab this opportunity and make Goa proud,” Shetye said.

Another proud moment for Goa cricket

For Venkata, the upcoming Australia series represents another opportunity to showcase his all-round abilities at the international youth level.

With his performances in domestic cricket, his success during the Sri Lanka tour and now his selection for the ODI squad, the 18-year-old continues to move forward in India’s highly competitive cricket development system.

As Goa celebrates another young cricketer earning national recognition, all eyes will now be on Chigurupati Venkata when India Under-19 takes on Australia Under-19 in Rajkot next month.
