Giant 30 cm Polycystic Kidney Successfully Removed at Manipal Hospital Goa

Goa: A 45-year-old man suffering from Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) was successfully treated at Manipal Hospital Goa after doctors removed a massively enlarged polycystic kidney measuring nearly 30 cm.

ADPKD is an inherited condition in which numerous fluid-filled cysts develop in the kidneys. In this case, the patient had been experiencing severe pain in his side following bleeding and rupture of a kidney cyst.

Imaging scans revealed that one of his kidneys had become significantly enlarged, occupying a large portion of the abdomen. Multiple cysts were also detected in the liver.

Due to the massive size of the kidney, doctors found that there was very little space available to safely perform a minimally invasive procedure. The surgical team therefore opted for an open nephrectomy, a procedure involving the surgical removal of the kidney through an abdominal incision.

The surgery was performed by Dr Ankit Vyas, Consultant – Urosurgeon at Manipal Hospital Goa.

The procedure was particularly challenging because the multiple cysts had significantly altered the normal anatomy surrounding the kidney. The surgical team had to carefully identify and manage nearby blood vessels and tissues while removing the enlarged organ.

Despite the complexity of the case, the kidney was successfully removed with minimal blood loss, and the patient recovered well following the surgery.

Speaking about the case, Dr Ankit Vyas said, “Giant polycystic kidneys are technically challenging surgeries. With careful preparation and a dedicated team approach, we were able to successfully treat this complex condition and help the patient recover comfortably.”

The case highlights the importance of timely medical evaluation for patients experiencing persistent pain or complications associated with kidney cysts. Early diagnosis and appropriate medical intervention can play an important role in managing complex conditions such as ADPKD.
