Rohan Khaunte Celebrates World Senior Citizens Day with Focus on Health, Security and Dignity in Porvorim

Porvorim, Goa | August 23, 2026: Hon’ble Minister for Tourism and Porvorim MLA Shri Rohan A. Khaunte marked World Senior Citizens Day with a programme focused on the health, well-being, safety, financial awareness and social engagement of senior citizens in the constituency.

The programme, held at Porvorim Gymkhana, brought together senior citizens for a range of informative and interactive activities aimed at encouraging healthy, active and dignified ageing.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Khaunte said that the progress of Porvorim must be measured by the quality of life enjoyed by its people across generations.

“Our senior citizens have contributed immensely to our society, and it is our responsibility to ensure that they have access to healthcare, opportunities to remain active and spaces where they can live with dignity and happiness,” he said.

He emphasised that senior citizens should have opportunities to exercise, interact, learn, laugh and remain active members of the community.

Focus on Accessible Healthcare

Highlighting healthcare initiatives in Porvorim, Shri Khaunte spoke about strengthening facilities that cater to the specific needs of senior citizens, including the Physiotherapy Centre and Dialysis Centre.

He said such facilities are intended to make essential healthcare services more accessible to elderly residents closer to their homes while strengthening the overall healthcare ecosystem in the constituency.

Brain Exercises and Social Engagement

The programme was powered by My Memory Café, which conducted demonstrations involving games and exercises designed to stimulate different areas of the brain and encourage mental engagement among senior citizens.

The activities promoted participation, interaction and an active lifestyle, reinforcing the message that age should not become a barrier to enthusiasm and community involvement.

Financial Awareness and Wellness

A financial literacy session conducted by Gavin D’Souza highlighted the importance of maintaining organised personal and financial records.

Participants were encouraged to keep essential information relating to bank accounts, investments, insurance, pensions, identification documents and other important household records properly organised and accessible.

A nutrition and wellness session by Dr Kanhaiya Sirsat of the Primary Health Centre, Porvorim, focused on the importance of balanced nutrition and regular physical activity for the overall well-being of senior citizens.

The programme reflected a broader vision of developing Porvorim as a constituency that works for people across generations—from children and young adults to senior citizens.

With a focus on healthcare, security, social participation and community spaces, the initiative reinforced the message that senior citizens should be able to live with dignity, independence, safety and a strong sense of belonging.
