Chennai, August 19, 2026: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced a new support package for all Members of the Legislative Assembly, providing government vehicles along with additional monthly financial assistance to help them carry out constituency and official responsibilities.
Under the new arrangement, every MLA will receive a government vehicle for official work. The state government will also provide ₹75,000 per month towards vehicle-related expenses, including fuel, maintenance and driver-related costs.
In addition, each MLA will receive ₹25,000 per month to appoint an assistant and meet the associated salary expenses. The measures apply to MLAs irrespective of their political affiliation.
The announcement was made in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday as part of a series of measures aimed at strengthening administrative support for elected representatives. The move followed concerns raised by legislators regarding logistical difficulties in travelling within their constituencies and addressing public grievances.
With 234 MLAs in the state, the monthly support announced for vehicle-related expenses and assistants amounts to ₹1 lakh per MLA, apart from the provision of the government vehicle.
The government has stated that the additional facilities are intended to enable legislators to travel more effectively within their constituencies, interact with citizens and attend to public grievances.
The announcement has also sparked public discussion over the balance between providing elected representatives with adequate resources and ensuring responsible use of public funds.
The new measures mark another significant announcement by the Vijay-led Tamil Nadu government, with the administration positioning the support as a step towards improving accessibility and efficiency in constituency-level governance.
