Mapusa, Goa: An organ donation awareness information desk was organised at St. Francis Xavier Church, Duler, Mapusa, on August 1 and 2, 2026, giving hundreds of parishioners an opportunity to learn more about organ donation and the importance of making informed decisions about the lifesaving gift.
The initiative was led by Gabriel Pereira, Organ Donation Ambassador from the MOHAN Foundation, and was conducted following all the Eucharistic Masses celebrated at the church over the weekend.
Awareness Ahead of Indian Organ Donation Day
Before the programme, Gabriel Pereira met with the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Caitan D’Souza, and briefed him about Indian Organ Donation Day, observed on August 3.
Since August 3 fell on a Monday this year, permission was sought to conduct the awareness activity after the weekend Masses so that a larger number of parishioners could be reached.
Rev. Fr. Caitan D’Souza welcomed the initiative and permitted the information desk to be set up after all the scheduled Masses.
The desk was available following the Saturday 6 p.m. Mass and the Sunday Masses at 7 a.m., 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Addressing Questions and Misconceptions
During the awareness programme, Gabriel distributed Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on organ donation and interacted with parishioners to explain the process and address common questions and misconceptions.
A key focus of the conversations was helping people understand organ donation, encouraging individuals to discuss their wishes with their family members and highlighting how organ donation can potentially give people in need a chance at life.
Around 800 Parishioners Reached
Approximately 800 parishioners attended the various Masses over the two-day period and had the opportunity to visit the information desk.
The initiative provided a platform for direct conversations within the community and encouraged parishioners to learn more about organ donation before making an informed decision.
At the conclusion of the programme, Gabriel Pereira expressed his gratitude to Rev. Fr. Caitan D’Souza for supporting the initiative and providing the opportunity to reach the parish community.
The awareness drive served as a meaningful community initiative aimed at promoting conversations around organ donation and encouraging more people to consider the possibility of giving the gift of life to those in need.
