Vinny Arora Defends Dheeraj Dhoopar on Lock Upp: ‘He’s Not Boring, The Best Is Yet to Come’

Actor Vinny Arora has spoken out in support of her husband Dheeraj Dhoopar, dismissing criticism that he appears “boring” or “too calm” on Netflix’s reality show Lock Upp. According to Vinny, viewers are simply witnessing Dheeraj’s authentic personality rather than a carefully planned game strategy.

Speaking about his journey on the show, Vinny said Dheeraj is naturally reserved and prefers observing people before reacting.

“He doesn’t create drama for the sake of it. He watches, understands people, and responds only when he genuinely feels it’s necessary. That’s exactly who he is in real life,” she said.

Biggest Challenge Was Staying Away from Family

Vinny revealed that the family’s biggest concern before Dheeraj entered the reality show wasn’t the competition itself, but the emotional challenge of staying away from home, especially from their young son.

She described Dheeraj as someone who finishes work and rushes home rather than spending time at parties or social gatherings.

According to her, the separation from family has been his toughest challenge during the show.

Why He Finally Said Yes to Lock Upp

Vinny shared that Dheeraj had previously declined several reality shows because of their long shooting schedules.

However, Lock Upp felt like the right opportunity because of its relatively shorter duration of around 40–45 days and his long association with Balaji Telefilms through Kundali Bhagya.

She said it felt like the perfect platform for his reality television debut.

“Good People Can Be Real Too”

Responding to viewers who believe contestants need to be aggressive or confrontational to appear genuine, Vinny questioned why calm and polite personalities are often misunderstood.

She believes audiences have become accustomed to equating loud behaviour with authenticity, while composed contestants are frequently labelled as fake or image-conscious.

“The best is yet to come,” she said, expressing confidence that viewers will gradually discover more layers of Dheeraj’s personality as the show progresses.

On Protecting His Image

Vinny also addressed criticism that television actors avoid conflicts to safeguard their public image.

She said there is nothing wrong with protecting a reputation earned through years of hard work, while adding that Dheeraj doesn’t deliberately avoid confrontations—he simply chooses not to react unnecessarily.

The ‘Shah Rukh Khan of Television’ Remark

Vinny also clarified comments surrounding Dheeraj being called the “Shah Rukh Khan of television.”

According to her, Dheeraj never gave himself that title.

She explained that the comparison came from fans and industry personalities, including filmmaker Karan Johar, while Dheeraj has only ever spoken about admiring Shah Rukh Khan and aspiring to emulate his dedication.

Emotional Moments Worry Her Most

Asked about contestants sharing deeply personal stories on Lock Upp, Vinny admitted that reliving difficult memories concerns her more than any revelations themselves.

She said her role has always been to support Dheeraj through life’s challenges and that she hopes to continue being his strength throughout the journey.

Hosted by Farah Khan and Riteish Deshmukh, Lock Upp is currently streaming on Netflix.
