Over 1 Million Passengers Use Air India’s Inflight Wi-Fi as Demand for Onboard Connectivity Soars

New Delhi: Air India has crossed a major digital milestone, with more than one million passengers connecting to its inflight Wi-Fi service between June 2025 and June 2026, highlighting the increasing importance of internet connectivity in modern air travel.

Operating across more than 55 Wi-Fi-enabled flights daily, the airline allows passengers to stay connected throughout their journey, enabling them to browse the internet, respond to emails, use messaging apps, and stream content while cruising at 35,000 feet.

Wi-Fi Usage Nearly Doubles

According to Air India’s latest usage data, inflight Wi-Fi adoption has increased significantly over the past year. Passenger usage grew from 30% in June 2025 to 55% in June 2026, demonstrating a strong and growing preference for staying connected during flights.

The airline also reported nearly 500 terabytes (TB) of onboard data consumption during the year.

Social Media Leads Passenger Activity

Entertainment remains the biggest driver of inflight internet usage.

Air India revealed that:

  • 89% of connected passengers used Wi-Fi primarily for social media and streaming.
  • The remaining 11% used the service for web browsing, emails, and messaging applications.
  • Overall, 86% of onboard data consumption came from streaming services, while 14% was used for browsing and communication.

Expanding Connected Fleet

The current figures are based on Air India’s fleet of 28 Wi-Fi-enabled aircraft, serving several domestic and international destinations.

Passengers can currently enjoy onboard internet connectivity on flights to major cities including:

  • London
  • New York
  • Newark
  • Frankfurt
  • Melbourne
  • Hong Kong
  • Singapore
  • Bali
  • Manila
  • Mauritius

The airline plans to progressively expand Wi-Fi connectivity across more aircraft and destinations as part of its fleet modernisation programme.

Digital Transformation in the Skies

The inflight connectivity milestone reflects Air India’s broader transformation strategy under its Vihaan.AI programme.

Following its return to the Tata Group in 2022, the airline has embarked on a comprehensive five-year transformation, including fleet expansion, aircraft refurbishment, enhanced passenger experience, and digital innovation.

With passengers increasingly expecting uninterrupted connectivity while travelling, inflight Wi-Fi is becoming a key component of the modern flying experience, enabling travellers to remain productive and entertained throughout their journey.
