The much-awaited Shimla Summer Festival 2026 commenced on Monday with great enthusiasm at the historic Ridge Ground, drawing large crowds of tourists and local residents eager to participate in one of Himachal Pradesh’s most celebrated annual events.
Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta formally inaugurated the five-day festival and urged visitors to follow administrative guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience while visiting the hill station.
Addressing the audience during the inaugural cultural evening, Governor Gupta described the festival as a significant platform for showcasing the rich culture, traditions and heritage of Himachal Pradesh. He congratulated the elected representatives, Shimla Municipal Corporation and district administration for successfully organizing the event.
Highlighting Shimla’s importance as one of India’s most popular tourist destinations, the Governor said the festival offers visitors from across the country an opportunity to experience the state’s vibrant cultural legacy. He stressed the importance of preserving folk traditions and ensuring that younger generations remain connected to their roots.
Welcoming artists from various parts of India, Gupta noted that such cultural gatherings promote mutual understanding and strengthen social harmony through the exchange of traditions and artistic expressions.
While praising Shimla’s scenic beauty and pleasant climate, he also emphasized the need for responsible tourism. He urged visitors to respect administrative guidelines and contribute towards preserving the hill station’s natural environment and resources.
The opening cultural evening featured captivating performances by artists from different regions, who presented traditional folk music and dance forms, leaving audiences enthralled.
According to the district administration, extensive arrangements have been made to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival, which will continue until June 12.
Additional District Magistrate Pankaj Sharma stated that performances by Himachali, Punjabi and artists from several other states will continue throughout the festival. He added that special emphasis has been placed on promoting Himachal Pradesh’s folk traditions through cultural presentations and dance performances.
Apart from cultural programmes, the festival also features a variety of attractions including a food festival, volleyball competitions, Zumba sessions, Mallakhamb demonstrations and numerous recreational activities designed to attract visitors of all ages.
The festival is expected to contribute significantly to the local economy by boosting tourism and generating employment opportunities for residents.
To ensure smooth operations, the city has been divided into sectors with executive magistrates, police personnel and administrative officials coordinating closely throughout the event.
Additional Superintendent of Police Abhishek informed that nearly 300 police personnel have been deployed at key locations including the Ridge and Mall Road. Enhanced traffic management measures, route diversions and sector-wise monitoring have also been implemented to ensure visitor safety and convenience.
Tourists attending the festival expressed excitement over the vibrant atmosphere, cultural attractions and refreshing weather.
Visitors from Uttar Pradesh and Delhi described the festival as a memorable experience, praising the festive spirit, local cuisine, entertainment options and the pleasant climate that provides respite from the summer heat in other parts of the country.
The Shimla Summer Festival remains one of Himachal Pradesh’s most anticipated annual celebrations, bringing together culture, entertainment, sports and tourism while showcasing the state’s rich heritage to visitors from across India and beyond.
