A tragic chapter unfolded on Mount Everest after Arun Kumar Tiwari, a 53-year-old mountaineer from Hyderabad, lost his life while descending from the world’s highest peak shortly after successfully completing his summit attempt.
According to reports, Tiwari reached the summit of Mount Everest on May 21 before encountering difficulties near the Hillary Step during his descent. The Hillary Step, located close to Everest’s summit zone, is considered one of the most technically challenging and dangerous sections of the climb due to its steep terrain, extreme altitude, and unpredictable weather conditions.
Despite the successful summit, Tiwari reportedly collapsed during the return journey, highlighting once again the immense physical and mental risks associated with high-altitude mountaineering.
In an emotional decision that has touched many online, Tiwari’s family later chose to leave his body on the mountain. The family reportedly cited both his lifelong passion for mountaineering and the severe logistical, financial, and safety challenges involved in conducting recovery operations at such dangerous altitudes.
Recovering bodies from Everest is considered one of the most difficult tasks in mountaineering. Harsh weather, oxygen depletion, narrow climbing routes, and life-threatening terrain often make rescue and recovery missions extremely risky for Sherpas and support teams.
The story has sparked widespread reactions across social media, with many users paying tribute to Tiwari’s courage and dedication to adventure sports. Fellow climbers and mountaineering enthusiasts described him as someone deeply committed to pushing human limits and pursuing his passion despite the dangers involved.
Mount Everest continues to attract climbers from around the world every year, but the mountain also remains a reminder of nature’s unpredictability and the extraordinary risks faced by mountaineers at extreme altitudes.
Tiwari’s passing has once again drawn attention to the emotional and physical realities behind Everest expeditions — where triumph and tragedy can often exist side by side.
