Malayalam cinema legend Mammootty was awarded an honorary doctorate by Mahatma Gandhi University on Monday, May 25, in recognition of his unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema and public life.
The honorary DLitt degree was presented during the university’s convocation ceremony by Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. The moment became especially emotional when Mammootty reflected on his late father’s wish for him to become a doctor.
Speaking at the ceremony, the veteran actor said, “My father wanted me to become a doctor. Today I am receiving my third doctorate. While I may not be able to treat people medically, I have been entertaining and ‘healing’ you all for the past 45 years. I will continue to do so until my last breath.”
The heartfelt statement received loud applause from the audience and quickly went viral across social media platforms.
Sharing moments from the ceremony online, Mammootty expressed gratitude to everyone who supported him throughout his journey. “Humbled to have received the Honorary DLitt from Mahatma Gandhi University today, presented by the Honourable Governor of Kerala. My gratitude to each and every one of you who stood by my side throughout this memorable journey,” he wrote.
This marks Mammootty’s third honorary doctorate from a Kerala state university. Earlier, he was honoured by the University of Kerala and the University of Calicut in 2010 for his immense contribution to cinema, arts, literature and public service.
With a career spanning more than five decades, Mammootty has acted in over 400 films across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada cinema. He remains one of India’s most celebrated actors and has won three National Film Awards for Best Actor.
On the professional front, Mammootty was recently seen in Patriot alongside Mohanlal, marking their reunion after nearly 17 years. The film also featured Fahadh Faasil, Nayanthara and Kunchacko Boban.
Earlier this year, the Government of India also announced the Padma Bhushan for Mammootty, honouring his extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema.
