Air India Delhi-Bengaluru Flight Grounded After Tail-Strike During Landing

An Air India aircraft operating from Delhi to Bengaluru was grounded after experiencing a tail-strike while landing at Bengaluru airport on Thursday. The incident involved flight AI2651, which landed safely despite the impact, according to airline officials.

Air India confirmed that all passengers and crew members disembarked normally and no injuries were reported. However, the aircraft has been withdrawn from operations for a detailed technical inspection.

In an official statement, the airline said, “Flight AI2651 operating from Delhi to Bengaluru on 21 May experienced a tail-strike during landing. The aircraft landed safely, and all passengers and crew disembarked normally.”

The airline further added that the aircraft has been grounded for a comprehensive inspection and that the matter will be investigated in coordination with aviation regulators.

DGCA Launches Investigation

Officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have initiated an investigation into the incident. Sources stated that the pilots operating the aircraft have been temporarily off-rostered pending inquiry.

According to officials familiar with the matter, the incident may have been triggered due to wake turbulence caused by another aircraft that had recently taken off from the runway.

One official explained that a freight Boeing 747 had departed shortly before the Air India Airbus A321 attempted its landing. The resulting air disturbance reportedly forced the pilots to initiate a go-around procedure before the tail struck the runway during the landing attempt.

Subsequent Flight Cancelled

As a consequence of the incident, Air India also cancelled the return flight AI2652 from Bengaluru to Delhi.

The airline stated that alternative arrangements are being made for affected passengers and that ground staff in Bengaluru are assisting travellers with rebooking and support services.

“Air India regrets the inconvenience caused. The safety of our passengers and crew remains our highest priority,” the airline spokesperson added.

The incident has once again brought focus on operational safety procedures and runway approach management amid increasing air traffic at major Indian airports.
