Dedicated Paediatric Intensive Care Unit Launched at Victor Hospital, Strengthening Critical Child Healthcare in South Goa

Victor Hospital has officially launched its dedicated Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), marking a significant advancement in specialised child healthcare services in South Goa. The inauguration ceremony was held on Friday, May 15, 2026, in the presence of dignitaries, medical professionals, and members of the Albuquerque family.

Chief Guest Digambar Kamat praised the vision and dedication of the late Victor Albuquerque in transforming healthcare facilities in Goa. He highlighted how Victor Hospital has consistently expanded its medical services and specialties over the years, with the PICU being another landmark initiative aimed at improving healthcare access for Goans.

Guest of Honour Vijai Sardesai appreciated the hospital’s contribution towards healthcare services in the state and described the launch as an important milestone for both the institution and the Albuquerque family. He emphasised the importance of specialised paediatric critical care facilities for young patients in Goa.

The newly launched PICU is designed to provide intensive care treatment and close monitoring for critically ill infants, children, and adolescents aged between one month and 16 years. The facility is equipped with modern paediatric critical care infrastructure including paediatric ventilators, High-Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), CPAP/BiPAP respiratory support systems, multiparameter monitors, infusion and syringe pumps, central oxygen systems, portable imaging support, and a paediatric crash cart.

The unit will handle a wide range of paediatric emergencies and critical illnesses including severe respiratory distress, airway emergencies, septic shock, neurological complications, trauma, poisoning, metabolic disorders, post-operative stabilisation, and tropical disease complications.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Surabhi Baxla stressed the importance of timely access to paediatric intensive care services in South Goa. With over eight years of experience in paediatrics and PICU management, Dr. Baxla highlighted that the facility will significantly improve emergency response and treatment outcomes for critically ill children.

She noted that common critical cases managed in PICUs include severe pneumonia with respiratory failure, dengue shock syndrome, diabetic ketoacidosis, poisoning, envenomation, acute meningoencephalitis, and post-surgical paediatric intensive monitoring.

The establishment of the PICU is expected to greatly reduce the need for transferring critically ill children to distant tertiary care centres outside South Goa, ensuring faster treatment, advanced care, and improved survival outcomes for paediatric patients across the region.

Also present during the inauguration were Sylvia Albuquerque, Varun Albuquerque, and Dr. Ajay Gangoli.

The launch reflects Victor Hospital’s continued commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and providing advanced specialised medical services in Goa.
