Karnataka Government Allows Hijab, Turbans and Janeu in Schools Under Revised Dress Code Rules

The government of Karnataka has officially eased school dress code regulations, allowing students to wear religious and cultural identifiers such as the hijab, turbans, and janeu in educational institutions across the state.

According to the revised guidelines, while students will now be permitted to wear these religious symbols and garments, authorities have clarified that the face must remain fully visible at all times within school premises.

The move marks a significant shift in the state’s approach towards dress code policies in schools and has already sparked widespread discussion across political, educational, and social circles.

Under the updated norms, Sikh students will be allowed to wear turbans, Hindu students may continue wearing janeu as part of their religious practice, and Muslim students can wear the hijab while attending classes, provided it does not obstruct facial visibility.

The government stated that the revised rules aim to balance individual religious freedom with institutional discipline and identification requirements within educational spaces.

The decision comes after years of intense debate and legal discussions surrounding dress code regulations in Karnataka schools and colleges, particularly concerning the hijab issue which drew national attention in recent years.

Supporters of the move have described it as an inclusive and balanced approach that respects cultural and religious diversity while maintaining standard institutional protocols. Others believe the revised policy could help reduce tensions and create a more accommodating educational environment for students from different communities.

Educational institutions across the state are now expected to implement the updated guidelines in accordance with government directives.

The latest development has once again brought conversations around personal freedom, secularism, school discipline, and constitutional rights into the national spotlight.
