The possibility of a third installment in The Devil Wears Prada franchise has sparked excitement among fans after director David Frankel revealed that he would be open to revisiting the iconic world once again.
The discussion around a potential third film gained momentum following the impressive box office performance of The Devil Wears Prada 2, which reunited original stars Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci nearly two decades after the original film’s release.
Speaking in an interview with Variety, Frankel admitted that he never expected to direct a second film after the massive success of the original movie in 2006.
“I said, ‘Never again,’ and here we are. So, I certainly would never say, ‘Never again,’ again,” Frankel said while reacting to the growing speculation around a third installment.
The filmmaker further added that reuniting with the beloved cast would be a major reason for his return.
“If there was an opportunity to revisit the characters and to share a few months with these wonderful actors again, obviously, I’d love it,” he said.
Frankel also praised the newer additions to the sequel’s cast, highlighting the importance of introducing fresh talent alongside the returning stars. He specifically mentioned actors such as Justin Theroux, BJ Novak, Simone Ashley and Helen J Shen for bringing a new energy to the franchise.
Reflecting on the balance between nostalgia and fresh storytelling, Frankel recalled Anne Hathaway’s description of the sequel as “getting the band back together for a new album.”
According to him, audiences wanted both familiar moments and fresh narratives — “the old hits with the new stuff.”
Meanwhile, the cast members themselves have also spoken about what it would take for a third film to happen.
In an earlier interview with People, Meryl Streep said the deciding factor would simply be “the script.” Emily Blunt echoed the sentiment, stating that a strong screenplay would be essential, while Anne Hathaway added that “everybody has to say yes.”
Blunt also emphasised that the franchise would need “the core four” to return, referring to Streep, Hathaway, Stanley Tucci and herself. Streep humorously responded, “They have to be alive.”
Released on May 1, 2026, The Devil Wears Prada 2 has emerged as a major global success. According to trade reports, the film has reportedly crossed Rs 2,650 crore worldwide within just eight days of release.
The sequel revisits the world of fashion, media and power nearly twenty years after the original film became a cultural phenomenon and introduced iconic characters such as Miranda Priestly and Andy Sachs to global audiences.
With both the director and cast expressing openness toward continuing the story, fans are already hoping that the fashion franchise may return for another stylish chapter in the future.
