India U17 Women Stand One Win Away From Historic FIFA World Cup Qualification

The India women’s national under-17 football team stand just one victory away from scripting a landmark moment in Indian football history as they prepare to face China women’s national under-17 football team in the quarterfinal of the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup on Monday, May 11.

A victory in the knockout clash would secure India a place in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, making it the first time an Indian football team qualifies for a FIFA tournament on merit through competitive qualification.

India had previously participated in the FIFA U17 Men’s World Cup in 2017 and the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in 2022 as hosts, but no Indian side has ever earned qualification through tournament performance.

Coached by Pamela Conti, the Young Tigresses reached the quarterfinal stage after finishing third in their group and emerging as the second-best third-placed side in the tournament.

India secured qualification for the knockout stage following a crucial victory over Lebanon in their final group-stage match, a result that kept their historic campaign alive.

China, however, enter the encounter as one of the tournament favourites after a dominant group-stage performance. They topped Group A with emphatic wins over Myanmar (6-0), Vietnam (3-0), and Thailand (6-0), showcasing their attacking strength and defensive solidity.

Despite the challenge, Pamela Conti praised her players for already achieving a historic milestone by becoming the first Indian U17 women’s side to reach the quarterfinals of the continental championship.

“It is an incredible achievement. Nobody believed it was possible, but from the very first moment, I believed that if we trained differently, we could achieve what we have done,” Conti said after India’s qualification.

Acknowledging the challenge posed by China, she added, “We know China are a very strong team. We will try to achieve qualification for the World Cup, knowing how difficult it will be.”

The match has generated excitement among Indian football fans, with many hoping the Young Tigresses can continue their dream run and create a breakthrough moment for women’s football in the country.
