Sporting Clube de Goa etched their name further into Goan football history after clinching a third consecutive Goa Professional League title with a dominant 3-1 victory over Calangute Association at Poriat Ground on Monday.
The Flaming Oranje, now proud owners of nine league titles, became only the third club in the competition’s history to complete a hattrick of GPL triumphs. Leading the charge was striker Doyal Alves, whose clinical hattrick powered Sporting to a memorable championship-winning performance.
Sporting Clube de Goa controlled the match from the opening whistle, displaying attacking intent and composure throughout the contest. Doyal Alves looked dangerous early on, striking the woodwork twice in the first half, while teammate Austin Fernandes also came close to breaking the deadlock.
The breakthrough finally arrived in first-half stoppage time when Alves reacted quickest to a rebound after Calangute goalkeeper Antush Moniz failed to hold onto an effort from Antush Moniz, giving Sporting a deserved 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The champions continued their dominance in the second half, and Alves doubled the advantage in the 50th minute with a composed finish from inside the box. Sporting’s relentless attacking display kept Calangute under pressure throughout the game.
As the match neared its conclusion, Alves completed his hattrick in the 90th minute after converting a precise cross from Moniz, effectively sealing the title in emphatic fashion for the Flaming Oranje.
Calangute Association managed a consolation goal deep into stoppage time through Nigel Silveira in the 90+5th minute. Their frustrations were compounded earlier when Sheldon Pereira received a red card in the 87th minute.
With this victory, Sporting Clube de Goa not only secured another league crown but also reinforced their status as one of Goa’s most successful football clubs.
In another Goa Professional League fixture played at Duler Stadium, FC Goa registered a hard-fought 2-1 win over Sesa Football Academy. Bryson Pereira and Sitroy Carvalho found the net for FC Goa, while Aman Rajbhar had earlier given Sesa the lead.
Sporting Clube de Goa will next face FC Goa at Duler Stadium as celebrations continue for their historic GPL triumph.
