With just hours to go before its theatrical release, Raja Shivaji is already generating significant buzz at the box office. The historical action drama, directed by and starring Riteish Deshmukh, has recorded strong advance bookings, positioning it for what could be the biggest opening day in Marathi cinema history.
Slated to release on May 1, the film is expected to dominate its home market. However, its Hindi-dubbed version is unlikely to contribute significantly to the overall box office performance, keeping the focus firmly on its regional appeal.
Since the release of its trailer, Raja Shivaji has drawn comparisons with major Hindi historical films. Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava opened at ₹30 crore, while Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji collected ₹15 crore on its first day.
While Raja Shivaji is expected to set a new benchmark within Marathi cinema, its opening figures are likely to remain below those of these Hindi big-budget releases.
Raja Shivaji is a three-hour historical drama that chronicles the life and reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, focusing on his conflicts with Aurangzeb.
The film features an ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Jitendra Joshi and Amole Gupte, with a special cameo by Salman Khan.
Backed by Mumbai Film Company and Jio Studios, the film combines scale, storytelling, and historical depth, aiming to redefine the Marathi film industry’s box office potential.
