Michael nears $220 million globally, crosses strong opening weekend despite mixed reviews

Michael is proving to be a major box office force despite facing mixed reviews and criticism over its portrayal of Michael Jackson’s life.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the biographical drama has earned an impressive $218.83 million globally within just four days, putting it close to the $220 million milestone.

According to industry reports, the film has grossed approximately Rs 2,065.44 crore worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films of 2026 so far. It currently ranks sixth among this year’s top global releases.

The film trails behind major releases such as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($831 million), Pegasus 3 ($648 million), Project Hail Mary ($613 million), Hoppers ($370 million) and Wuthering Heights ($241 million).

In North America, the film opened with a strong $39.29 million on Friday, followed by $32.46 million on Saturday and $25.45 million on Sunday. Its domestic total currently stands at $97.20 million (approximately Rs 917.49 crore).

Made on a reported budget of $155 million, the film stars Jaafar Jackson — nephew of Michael Jackson — in the lead role.

The supporting cast includes Nia Long, Colman Domingo, Miles Teller, Laura Harrier and Mike Myers.

India Box Office Performance

In India, Michael is steadily approaching the Rs 20 crore mark.

The film earned Rs 2.25 crore on Monday, taking its total India collection to Rs 18.75 crore.

This marked a 61.54% drop from Sunday’s Rs 5.85 crore, which is expected as weekday collections typically slow down after strong weekend openings.

The film recorded an overall occupancy of 19.19% on Monday, with night shows performing better than morning screenings.

Despite the decline, Michael continues to perform well globally and remains one of the biggest Hollywood releases of 2026.
