Paresh Rawal Calls Sunil Grover a ‘Volcano of Talent’, Says TV Comedy Is Tough Competition for Films

Veteran Bollywood actor Paresh Rawal has sparked an important conversation around the evolving landscape of comedy in India, highlighting how television and digital platforms are increasingly becoming tough competition for traditional comedy films.

Currently receiving appreciation for his role in Bhooth Bangla, directed by Priyadarshan, Rawal shared his views in a recent interview, pointing out the high standards set by shows like The Kapil Sharma Show.

Speaking candidly, Rawal praised comedian Sunil Grover, calling him a “volcano of talent” and emphasising the immense skill required to create and sustain comedy at that level. He noted that competing with such content demands a shift in mindset from filmmakers, as television comedy today is backed by strong writing teams and consistent output.

The actor highlighted a key challenge faced by the film industry — the lack of resources dedicated to comedy writing. According to him, while television shows often have teams of 10–15 writers crafting content, film producers sometimes struggle to even hire a single dedicated writer. This gap, he believes, significantly impacts the quality and consistency of comedy films.

Rawal further added that comedy has become increasingly competitive, with audiences having access to fresh content daily. Shows like The Kapil Sharma Show not only entertain but also set a benchmark that films must match or surpass to stay relevant.

Meanwhile, Sunil Grover continues to win widespread acclaim for his versatility and mimicry skills. His ability to transform into personalities like S. S. Rajamouli, Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan has earned him a reputation as one of the most dynamic performers in the comedy space.

As audience preferences evolve and content consumption becomes more immediate and diverse, Rawal’s insights underline a larger shift — one where comedy films must innovate, adapt, and invest more deeply in writing and creativity to keep pace with the rapidly changing entertainment landscape.
