In a major leadership transition, Apple has announced that John Ternus, Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, will take over as Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Tim Cook, who is stepping down after 15 years in the role.
Ternus, a 25-year veteran at Apple, has played a pivotal role in shaping some of the companyโs most iconic products, including the iPhone, iPad, AirPods, Apple Watch, and the Macโs transition to Apple silicon. His elevation to CEO marks a continuation of Appleโs tradition of promoting deeply embedded leaders who understand the companyโs core philosophy of innovation and design.
The leadership change will come into effect on September 1, with Tim Cook transitioning to the role of Executive Chairman. In this capacity, Cook is expected to remain closely involved in strategic direction and policy engagement, ensuring continuity during the transition.
Cook, who took over from Steve Jobs in 2011, leaves behind a remarkable legacy. Under his leadership, Apple achieved unprecedented growth, becoming the first company to reach a $1 trillion valuation in 2018 and expanding to an estimated $4 trillion valuation today. His tenure was marked by global expansion, a strong focus on services, sustainability initiatives, and steady product evolution.
In his remarks, Cook described Ternus as a โvisionaryโ with an engineerโs mindset and a leaderโs heart, expressing confidence in his ability to guide Apple into its next phase. The announcement comes amid earlier industry speculation regarding succession planning following the exit of senior executive Jeff Williams.
Ternus now takes charge at a critical time for Apple, as the company continues to navigate advancements in artificial intelligence, hardware innovation, and global market dynamics. His deep engineering background and hands-on experience with Appleโs product ecosystem are expected to play a key role in shaping the companyโs future trajectory.
