An organ donation awareness session was conducted on April 9, 2026, at the Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol, Goa, aiming to educate and inspire seminarians about the importance of organ donation. The session was led by Gabriel Pereira, an organ donation ambassador representing the MOHAN Foundation, who brought both knowledge and personal insight to the discussion.
The Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol, known as the diocesan major seminary of the Primatial Catholic Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, provided a meaningful setting for the initiative. Gabriel began by sharing his personal journey and motivation for becoming an organ donation ambassador, setting an engaging and reflective tone for the session.
The programme was highly interactive, with seminarians actively participating throughout. Using a PowerPoint presentation, Gabriel explained key aspects of organ donation, including its legal framework and practical processes. He also engaged the audience through questions about transplant hospitals in Goa and types of organ transplants, rewarding correct responses with MOHAN Foundation keychains that featured the organisation’s logo and helpline number.
A key message highlighted during the session was the importance of clearly communicating one’s intention to donate organs to family members, as consent from next of kin is essential. Gabriel encouraged seminarians, as future priests, to not only inform their families and superiors about their decision but also to advocate for organ donation within their communities.
Informational flyers containing frequently asked questions and QR codes were distributed, enabling participants to learn more and pledge as donors. Notably, six seminarians took donor cards, marking a significant step toward commitment to the cause.
The session also explored the alignment of organ donation with Catholic values, emphasising it as an act of compassion and service. Gabriel encouraged the seminarians to integrate this message into their future pastoral roles, spreading awareness and inspiring others.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks to Rev. Fr. Donato Rodrigues, Rector of the seminary, for facilitating the initiative. The programme served as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility to promote organ donation and save lives through awareness and action.
