Goa to Witness Barely 8 Minutes of Lunar Eclipse as Moon Rises After Totality Ends

Goa will witness only the final few minutes of today’s total lunar eclipse, with most of the celestial event occurring before moonrise in the state.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the moon will rise in Panaji at 6:40 pm IST, while the umbral phase of the eclipse will conclude at 6:48 pm IST. This leaves observers with a narrow window of barely eight minutes to witness what will be only a faint partial eclipse.

The totality phase — when the Earth’s shadow completely covers the Moon — will already have ended before moonrise in Goa. As a result, skywatchers in the state will miss the dramatic “blood moon” phase that typically draws widespread attention.

The Association of Friends of Astronomy has cautioned that daylight conditions during moonrise could further reduce visibility, stating that the eclipse may be “almost nil” to the naked eye. Observers are expected to see only around 3–4% of the eclipse at best.

Astronomy enthusiasts are advised to find clear horizons and minimal light obstruction if attempting to catch a glimpse. However, experts note that atmospheric brightness at dusk may significantly hinder viewing conditions.

While Goa’s view may be limited, other parts of India and the world are expected to witness a more substantial portion of the eclipse under clearer night skies.
