Mormugao, Goa | June 5, 2025 — Reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and clean energy, the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) inaugurated a 3MWp / 2.25 MW photovoltaic grid-connected solar power plant on the occasion of World Environment Day.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the auspicious hands of Dr. N. Vinodkumar, IPoS, Chairperson of MPA, in the presence of Shri Vinayaka Rao, Deputy Chairperson, Heads of Departments, senior officials from the Goa Electricity Department (GED), Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA), and the EPC contractor M/s Oriana Power Ltd.
This milestone marks a major step in MPA’s ongoing journey toward a greener, more energy-efficient port infrastructure.
⚡ About the Solar Power Plant
The newly commissioned solar power plant has a total capacity of 3MWp, with 2.25 MW being actively grid-connected. It is expected to significantly reduce the Port’s dependence on conventional energy sources and lower its carbon footprint.
Developed by M/s Oriana Power Ltd., the system is designed to integrate seamlessly with the port’s existing power grid and supports future scalability. This project demonstrates MPA’s vision of aligning its operations with national and global climate action goals.
🤝 Interactive Session on Future Green Initiatives
Following the inauguration, a productive interactive session was held between MPA officials, representatives from GED, GEDA, and Oriana Power Ltd. The session focused on exploring additional renewable energy opportunities within the port ecosystem.
Several ideas were actively discussed, including:
- Ground-mounted solar installations in available open areas
- Rooftop solar panels on port buildings and warehouses
- Open Access (OA) systems to enable direct renewable energy procurement
- Captive utilization of the power generated by the Port itself
- Water-based (floating) solar plants for reservoirs or water bodies within the port premises
This forward-looking conversation reflects MPA’s proactive approach to identifying innovative, site-specific solutions for enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability.
🌍 Leading by Example
Chairperson Dr. N. Vinodkumar highlighted the strategic importance of investing in renewables:
“On this World Environment Day, MPA is proud to take a concrete step toward green energy. This solar power plant is just the beginning—we aim to become a model of sustainability in port operations, not only in Goa but across India.”
🌱 A Greener Port, A Greener Tomorrow
MPA’s efforts are part of a broader national push toward green port initiatives, aligning with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways’ vision to decarbonize maritime infrastructure. The Port’s solar plant, combined with ongoing collaborations with energy agencies, sets the stage for a more resilient and eco-friendly future.
As Mormugao Port embraces solar energy today, it shines a light on what’s possible when infrastructure, innovation, and environmental responsibility come together.
