Lions Club of Loutolim Honours Talents Rupesh Jogale & Mario Pimenta

The Lions Club of Loutolim recently celebrated the achievements of two outstanding individuals from the village, Rupesh Jogale and Mario Pimenta, during a special felicitation ceremony held as part of the official visit of District Governor PMJF Lion Jai Amol Naik.

The event began with a warm welcome by President Lion Allen Araujo, who highlighted the consistent efforts of the club in serving the community despite being based in a rural area. Secretary Lion Alwyn Mascarenhas presented a detailed overview of the club’s initiatives since July, which included environmental efforts like sapling distribution during Vanamahotsav, educational support for deserving students, financial aid, and various charitable activities.

The highlight of the evening was the recognition of two local talents who have made significant contributions in their respective fields. Rupesh Jogale, a respected name in Goan theatre and direction, was honoured for his dedication to the performing arts. Known for his powerful portrayals, including roles depicting Jesus Christ, Jogale shared his journey and expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition bestowed upon him.

Mario Pimenta, a young and promising filmmaker from Goa, was also felicitated for his growing achievements in cinema and participation in various competitions. At just 21, Mario reflected on his journey, acknowledging the unwavering support of his family, especially his mother and sister. He encouraged aspiring individuals to pursue their dreams with confidence and action, noting that such recognition at a young age was both motivating and humbling.

District Governor PMJF Lion Jai Amol Naik congratulated both honourees and commended the Lions Club of Loutolim for its impactful work. He encouraged more individuals to join the Lions movement, emphasising its core philosophy of service and positive societal impact. During the event, he also presented letters from the International President of Lions Clubs International to veteran members, along with medals and badges, recognising their long-standing dedication.

Treasurer MGF Lion Joaquim Monteiro delivered the vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to all attendees and contributors to the event’s success. With nearly five decades of service, the Lions Club of Loutolim continues to play a vital role in fostering community development while celebrating and encouraging local talent.

Cyber Smart Generation: Awareness Drive Held at St. Francis Xavier’s High School, Siolim

A significant step towards building digital awareness among young students was witnessed in Siolim, Goa, as a cyber awareness and online safety programme was conducted at St. Francis Xavier’s High School on 25th February 2026. The initiative was organised by the Siolim Free Legal Aid Cell of V.M. Salgaocar College of Law, aiming to equip students with essential knowledge to navigate the increasingly complex digital world safely.

The session was led by PSI Sahil Vijay Warang, Police Sub-Inspector from Anjuna Police Station, who addressed the students as the guest speaker. His talk focused on the growing threats of cybercrime and the importance of awareness as the first line of defence. The programme was held in the presence of Fr. Dilip Tete, Headmaster of the school, and Fr. Marcos Dsouza, Principal of the Higher Secondary section, both of whom appreciated the initiative and its relevance in today’s digital age.

With participation from approximately 600 to 650 students, along with teachers and members of the Legal Aid Cell, the session turned into an engaging and insightful learning experience. Students were introduced to the concept of cybercrime as an “unseen danger,” where criminals often exploit human emotions such as fear, greed, and curiosity rather than relying solely on advanced technology.

PSI Warang shared real-life examples of various online frauds, including fake investment schemes, job scams, sextortion cases, fake loan applications, impersonation frauds, matrimonial scams, and online booking frauds. He also explained newer threats such as digital arrest scams and emotional manipulation tactics, helping students understand how easily individuals can fall prey without proper awareness.

A key focus of the session was on developing a responsible digital mindset. Students were encouraged to stay cautious while using social media platforms, online games, and digital payment systems. Practical tips were shared on identifying suspicious links, protecting personal information, and verifying online transactions before taking action.

The session also introduced students to important safety resources such as the National Cybercrime Helpline 1930 and official cybercrime reporting platforms, empowering them with tools to seek help in case of any online threat. The interactive nature of the programme allowed students to actively participate, ask questions, and relate to real-world scenarios discussed during the session.

Faculty members, including Assistant Professor Shreya Shah, who serves as the Faculty Incharge of the Legal Aid Cell, along with student coordinators and school staff, played a key role in organising the event. Their efforts ensured that the programme was both informative and impactful.

The event concluded with a strong message: awareness is the most powerful defence against cybercrime. As students left the session more informed and alert, the programme successfully reinforced the importance of staying vigilant in an increasingly digital world.

Double Rescue, Dog Attacks and Emergencies Mark Busy Weekend on Goa Coast

A series of incidents unfolded across Goa’s coastline over the weekend, keeping Drishti Marine lifesavers constantly engaged in ensuring the safety of beachgoers. From a dramatic double rescue at sea to cases of dog attacks, medical emergencies, and recovery of lost belongings, the stretch of beaches witnessed heightened activity.

    At Morjim beach, two tourists from Maharashtra found themselves caught in a flash rip current while swimming. Acting swiftly, a lifesaver rushed to their aid before additional support arrived on a jetski, successfully bringing both individuals back to shore. The timely intervention prevented what could have escalated into a serious situation.

    Meanwhile, at Benaulim beach, a lifesaver on duty was attacked by a group of stray dogs, sustaining bite injuries. In a separate incident at Majorda, a 52-year-old beachgoer was also attacked by a stray dog and required immediate first aid before being advised further medical care. These incidents have once again raised concerns about stray dog presence along popular beach stretches.

    At Colva beach, a watersports operator suffered a leg injury after a boat overturned due to strong waves, with lifesavers administering first aid on-site. Elsewhere, at Palolem, a senior tourist experienced breathing difficulties and was promptly assisted with oxygen support before being shifted to a hospital.

    Apart from emergencies, lifesavers also played a crucial role in assisting tourists by recovering and returning lost items, including bags, identification cards, and mobile phones, across beaches like Calangute, Galgibaga, and Benaulim. Their efforts ensured that valuables were safely returned following proper verification procedures.

    The weekend’s events underline the unpredictable nature of coastal environments and highlight the critical role played by trained lifesavers. Their vigilance, quick response, and dedication continue to make Goa’s beaches safer for both locals and visitors.

    ‘Shivshahichi Garjana’ Brings Shivaji Maharaj’s Legacy Alive in Mapusa

    Mapusa witnessed a grand celebration of history and culture as the Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, presented “Shivshahichi Garjana” to commemorate Shiv Jayanti. Held at Shree Bodgeshwar Ground, the event transformed the venue into a vibrant stage of storytelling, bringing to life the journey and legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

      The large-scale production featured over 150 artistes performing on a specially designed revolving stage, creating an immersive theatrical experience for the audience. Through powerful performances and dramatic sequences, the event captured key moments from Shivaji Maharaj’s life, highlighting his courage, leadership, and connection with Goa and its people.

      Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte emphasised the importance of presenting history in engaging and contemporary formats, noting that such initiatives help connect younger generations with India’s rich heritage. The event also saw the presence of key dignitaries, including Joshua D’Souza, Priya Mishal, and officials from GTDC, reflecting strong institutional support for cultural initiatives in the state.

      A standout moment of the evening was the spectacular drone show featuring 300 drones. The sky lit up with synchronised formations depicting iconic symbols such as the Bhagwa Flag, Raigad Fort, and the coronation of Shivaji Maharaj. The visual display added a modern and captivating dimension to the historical tribute.

      The performances were further elevated by the portrayal of Shivaji Maharaj by Shantanu Moghe and Jijamata by Alka Kubal, whose powerful enactments brought emotional depth and authenticity to the production.

      The event drew a large and enthusiastic crowd, underlining the deep cultural connection and reverence for Shivaji Maharaj among the people of Goa. “Shivshahichi Garjana” not only celebrated a historic figure but also showcased Goa’s commitment to blending tradition with innovation, creating memorable experiences for both residents and visitors.

      Navy Chief Urges Joint Action on Indian Ocean Threats at Goa Conclave

      The 5th edition of the Goa Maritime Conclave brought together naval leaders and maritime experts from across the Indian Ocean Region in Panaji, where India’s Chief of the Naval Staff, Dinesh K Tripathi, underscored the urgent need for collective action to address growing maritime threats.

      Addressing representatives from multiple Indian Ocean nations at the Naval War College in Goa, Adm Tripathi emphasized that the scale and complexity of challenges in the region make it difficult for any single country to manage them alone. He highlighted that coordinated maritime operations, when backed by clearly defined objectives, can generate both deterrence and reassurance, strengthening overall regional stability.

      The Navy Chief pointed to a range of persistent and emerging threats, including piracy, illegal unreported and unregulated fishing, trafficking of narcotics and arms, and irregular human migration. He noted that while there has been some progress—such as a reported decline in IUU fishing incidents due to enhanced surveillance and enforcement—several threats continue to evolve in scale and sophistication.

      Piracy, which had seen a period of relative decline, is now showing renewed adaptability, with incidents being reported farther offshore. At the same time, maritime trafficking networks are expanding, with routes linked to regions such as the Golden Crescent and Golden Triangle increasingly converging at sea. Irregular migration has also become a growing concern, with rising fatalities linked to unsafe and long-distance sea journeys.

      Highlighting India’s role in fostering cooperation, Adm Tripathi referred to initiatives such as the deployment of an Indian naval ship under the SAGAR framework in the South-West Indian Ocean, which included a multinational crew drawn from partner nations. He described this as an initial step toward deeper collaboration and trust-building among regional maritime forces.

      The conclave, attended by naval chiefs and senior officials from 15 countries, reaffirmed a shared commitment to strengthening cooperative mechanisms aimed at tackling common challenges. Organised by the Indian Navy, the event focused on progressing lines of effort to mitigate dynamic threats in the region, reinforcing India’s position as a key facilitator of maritime dialogue and security cooperation.

      As discussions concluded, the overarching message was clear: safeguarding the vast and strategically vital Indian Ocean requires sustained collaboration, shared responsibility, and a unified approach to ensure long-term security and stability.
