Music by the Sea: A Candlelight Piano Evening That Blended Melody, Memory and Magic

Written by Maryanne De Souza

As pianist Tatyana Dichenko looked out at the sea and remarked, “What more could a pianist ask for?”, the sentiment resonated instantly with the audience. The setting itself — waves gently rolling in, stars overhead, and a cool sea breeze — felt like a natural extension of the music.

She opened the evening with a soulful piano arrangement of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen,” immediately setting the tone for a performance that was both uplifting and deeply moving. The audience was soon immersed in a musical journey through beloved hits by ABBA and Queen, melodies that have transcended generations and continue to unite listeners.

Between performances, Dichenko offered thoughtful reflections on the songs and the legendary artists behind them, adding depth and context to the evening. The familiar rhythm of “We Will Rock You” had the audience clapping along, while “I Want to Break Free,” performed within the walls of the historic fort, created a powerful moment of quiet reflection on freedom, expression, and identity.

Music, in its purest form, has the ability to transform spaces and people alike. Thousands of LED candles appeared to glow with life, memories resurfaced, and strangers became part of a shared emotional experience. With the sea as a soundtrack and elegant piano arrangements filling the night air, the concert felt nothing short of magical.

It was an evening that lingered long after the final note — a reminder of how music can move, heal, and connect.
Those looking to experience a similar night of enchantment can book a candlelight concert.

The programme was attended by Fr. Eremito Rebello, Christopher Fonseca, Orville D. Rodrigues, Alina Saldanha, and Member of Parliament Captain Viriato Fernandes. Presidents of fishermen associations from different parts of Goa were also present, reflecting the unity and solidarity of the fishing community.

On the occasion, GRE felicitated more than 35 senior fisher leaders who have dedicated their lives to the cause of traditional fishers. The organisation also honoured Director of Fisheries Chandrakant Velip and former Director of Fisheries Nandakishor Verlekar, along with several other fisher leaders from across Goa who have made significant contributions towards the welfare and protection of the fishing community, many of whom have faced imprisonment during their struggles.

Addressing the gathering, Fr. Eremito Rebello recalled his memories of late Matanhy Saldanha, describing him as a mass leader who lived and fought for the rights of fishers and the poor.

General Secretary of GRE, Olencio Simoes, stated that the organisation’s 50-year-long struggle has resulted in historic legislations that have benefited fishers in Goa and have also served as an inspiration for fishing communities worldwide. He cautioned that greater challenges lie ahead and appealed for unity to protect the rights and future of the fishing industry in Goa.

President of GRE, Agnelo Rodrigues, emotionally remembered late Matanhy Saldanha as his mentor and guiding force. He said that Saldanha dedicated his entire life to the fishing community and that the community’s survival today is rooted in his sacrifices and leadership.

The Golden Jubilee celebration stood as a tribute to the visionary founders, pioneer leaders, and thousands of fishers who sustained the movement for five decades.
