The capital city of Panaji transformed into a dazzling spectacle of colour, music and celebration as Goa Carnaval 2026 was officially flagged off on February 14. The grand ceremony was led by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, alongside Member of Parliament Sadanand Shet Tanavade, Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte, Chairman GTDC Kedar J Naik, CCP Mayor Shri Rohit Monserrate, Director of Tourism Kedar Naik and Managing Director GTDC Kuldeep Arolkar, among other dignitaries.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister emphasised that the festival reflects Goa’s inclusive and welcoming spirit, uniting people across cultures through celebration. He highlighted that such events not only strengthen the State’s cultural identity but also enhance its global visibility as a vibrant tourism destination. The strong turnout of international visitors, many attending for the first time, reaffirmed Goa’s growing appeal in experiential and cultural tourism.

Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte described Carnaval as a living expression of Goa’s heritage and community spirit. He noted that the festival plays a vital role in promoting Goa beyond its beaches, spotlighting its traditions, artistic talent and immersive cultural experiences while supporting local performers and communities.

The ceremonial flag-off witnessed an overwhelming public response, with streets lined by residents and tourists from across India and abroad. The atmosphere shifted instantly as King Momo made his grand entrance, declaring the start of days filled with revelry and joy. His traditional entourage set the tone for the procession that followed.

Elaborately designed floats rolled through the heart of Panaji, each narrating stories of Goa’s rich past and contemporary aspirations. Themes ranged from cultural heritage to social awareness and festive traditions. Traditional folk performances blended seamlessly with high-energy musical acts, transforming the city into a moving theatre of rhythm and colour.

Behind the scenes, the Department of Tourism ensured enhanced infrastructure, crowd management systems and visitor facilitation measures to provide a safe and seamless experience for all attendees. Grand Curtain Raiser in Porvorim Sets the Stage for Goa Carnaval 2026

The much-awaited Goa Carnaval 2026 commenced on a vibrant note this evening with a spectacular curtain raiser held at Porvorim, setting the tone for five days of colour, music and celebration across the State. The enthusiastic gathering of residents, artists and visitors transformed the town into a lively canvas of Goan culture and festive cheer.

The parade was flagged off by Hon’ble Minister for Tourism Rohan A. Khaunte in the presence of Hon’ble Chairman GTDC Kedar J Naik, Director of Tourism Kedar Naik, Managing Director GTDC Kuldeep Arolkar and other senior officials. The evening underscored a collaborative effort between the Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, and the Porvorim Carnaval Committee to deliver a celebration rooted in heritage and responsibility.

A defining highlight of the evening was the ceremonial proclamation by King Momo, Shri Cedric Da Costa, who led the procession in a traditional bullock cart, invoking the spirit of unity, joy and responsible celebration. The revival of this earlier custom paid homage to the legacy of musician Timoteo Fernandes, who played a pivotal role in reintroducing Carnaval in 1965 and popularising the arrival of King Momo in this distinctive manner.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Rohan A. Khaunte emphasised the importance of reconnecting with cultural roots while ensuring that the younger generation experiences the festival in its authentic form. He also highlighted that this year’s curtain raiser was consciously organised with certain route restrictions in place due to traffic regulations, ensuring respect for commuters and residents. Notably, the celebration avoided large mechanised floats and fuel-driven vehicles, reflecting a sustainable and environmentally conscious approach.

Chairman GTDC Shri Kedar J Naik described Carnaval as a reflection of Goa’s unique cultural journey shaped by centuries of rich traditions and global influences. He noted that the festival brings together communities across faiths and regions, showcasing Goa’s vibrant artistic expression through music, dance and creative performances.

Director of Tourism Shri Kedar Naik remarked that the curtain raiser in Porvorim set the rhythm for the grand festivities that will unfold across the State. The evening featured enthusiastic participation from local cultural groups, with performances that filled the air with rhythm, colour and excitement.

The celebration now moves to Panaji on February 14 for the grand float parade, followed by festivities in Margao on February 15, Vasco da Gama on February 16 and Mapusa and Morjim on February 17. As celebrations unfold across these towns, Goa stands poised to experience one of its most cherished cultural festivals in full splendour, blending nostalgia, sustainability and collective joy.

Mathias Panaji Run 2026 to Be Held on March 1 at Campal

The Rotary Club of Panaji Mid-Town will organise the Mathias Panaji Run 2026 on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at the SAG Sports Complex, Campal, Panaji, with the flag-off scheduled at 6.30 am. Now in its second edition, the run aims to bring together fitness enthusiasts, families and the larger community under the vibrant theme “Live Life in Colour,” inspired by the approaching festival of Holi.

The event will feature a 10 km timed run with winners declared across categories, a 5 km fun run and walk open to participants of all age groups with attractive prizes, and a special 1 km walk involving NAB Goa students and Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), reinforcing the message of inclusivity through sport. Cash prizes worth ₹1 lakh will be awarded across categories.

Speaking at the media briefing held in Panaji, Rtn. Gauresh Nayak, President of the Rotary Club of Panaji Mid-Town, emphasised that the Mathias Panaji Run 2026 goes beyond competition. He said that with the theme “Live Life in Colour,” the club wants Goa to celebrate not only colours but also the values of health, unity, inclusivity and joy. He added that the run is about community spirit, ensuring that everyone—irrespective of age or ability—feels valued and included. Nayak further noted that proceeds from the event will support Rotary’s flagship initiatives in education, healthcare, disability support, sanitation and medical aid.

Event Coordinator Ann Sheetal Pai Kane expressed confidence that the run will attract nearly 2,000 participants this year. She explained that organising the event in the heart of Panaji was a conscious decision to encourage greater participation from Ponjékars. She added that the event is designed not only for runners but also for families and friends who wish to come out, cheer and be part of the experience.

Gajanan Karkare, Secretary of the club, urged citizens to participate, stating that the run is an opportunity to focus on good health while also contributing to Rotary’s ongoing social causes that impact lives across Goa. Rtn. Sunil Pai Kane, Project Director of the event, was also present at the briefing.

The Mathias Panaji Run 2026 is title-sponsored by Joe Mathias and Mariola Mathias of the Mathias Group of Companies. The sponsors expressed pride in supporting the initiative, highlighting their commitment to promoting health, wellness and community spirit in Goa, and looking forward to a strong turnout on March 1.

Goa Gears Up for Grand Statewide Carnaval 2026 Celebrations

Goa is all set to welcome the much-anticipated Carnaval 2026, one of the State’s most iconic cultural celebrations that brings together colour, music, dance, and a spirit of joyful togetherness. Organised by the Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, the festival continues to reflect the State’s rich heritage and festive traditions, drawing participation from residents and visitors alike.

The official announcement of Goa Carnaval 2026 was made in the presence of Managing Director of GTDC Kuldeep Arolkar, Deputy Director of Tourism Dhiraj Wagle, Assistant Director of Tourism Jayesh Kankonkar, General Manager GTDC Gavin Dias, Deputy General Manager (Hotels & Marketing) Deepak Narvekar, and King Momo Cedric Da Costa, who symbolically ushered in the festive spirit of the season.

Hon’ble Minister for Tourism Rohan A. Khaunte stated that Goa Carnaval is a celebration of joy, inclusivity, and cultural pride. By taking the festivities across multiple locations, the aim is to ensure wider community participation while offering visitors an authentic Goan experience. He added that Carnaval 2026 reflects the vision of responsible and regenerative tourism, celebrating traditions while caring for people and the environment.

Director of Tourism Kedar Naik noted that Carnaval is one of Goa’s most vibrant cultural expressions. He said that the 2026 edition has been planned to ensure wider reach, safety, cleanliness, and a high-quality festive experience, with coordinated celebrations across the State to create a joyful and culturally rich atmosphere for residents and tourists alike.

Managing Director of GTDC Kuldeep Arolkar highlighted the scale of preparations, stating that Goa Carnaval 2026 is being organised with a total outlay of approximately ₹1.53 crore. This includes ₹48 lakh towards prize money to encourage greater participation and creativity, and ₹1.04 crore for infrastructure and logistics across all centres. Centre-wise allocations include ₹19 lakh for Porvorim and ₹16 lakh for Morjim, while Panaji, Margao, Vasco, and Mapusa have been allocated ₹29.35 lakh towards prize money and infrastructure, ensuring uniform standards of quality, safety, and visitor experience across locations.

The festivities will begin with the traditional curtain raiser on 13th February 2026 at Porvorim. The celebrations will then move to Panaji on 14th February with the ceremonial flag-off of the main Carnaval parade. Margao will host the festivities on 15th February, followed by Vasco on 16th February. The celebrations will conclude on 17th February with grand parades and events in Mapusa and Morjim, spreading the spirit of Carnaval across North Goa.

Adding to the excitement, the official Carnaval Jingle 2026, performed by RhythMix, was unveiled, setting the musical tone for the festivities. This year’s celebrations will echo the vibrant slogan announced by King Momo: “Amche Goem, Amche Lok, Amcho Carnaval – Viva Goa, Viva Carnaval,” capturing the essence of community pride and collective celebration.

Each venue will come alive with colourful float parades, lively performances, music, and dance, creating the joyful atmosphere that defines Goa’s Carnaval. The festival brings together communities, artists, performers, and visitors, offering a cultural experience that showcases the State beyond its beaches.

Goa to Host World-Class IRF Street Race Weekend at Mopa

Panaji, 9 February: Goa is all set to script a landmark chapter in Indian motorsport with the hosting of the IRF Goa Street Race Weekend, a world-class street racing spectacle that will bring high-adrenaline motorsport action to the state.


Highlighting Goa’s suitability as a host destination, Akhilesh Reddy, Chairman of Racing Promotions Pvt Ltd (RPPL) and Indian Racing Festival (IRF), said the state’s vibrant culture, strong tourism infrastructure and global recognition make it ideal for an event of this scale. He noted that Goa’s cosmopolitan character, excellent connectivity and year-round appeal allow elite motorsport to merge seamlessly with lifestyle and tourism experiences, placing the state firmly on the global sporting calendar.

Reddy, who has been closely involved in the planning of the event, explained the complexity of converting public roads into a professional racing venue. The Goa Street Circuit at Manohar International Airport, Mopa, spans 2.064 kilometres and features 12 turns. Designed in collaboration with technical partners and FIA-standard safety consultants, the circuit has been engineered to meet international racing benchmarks while ensuring optimal spectator experience.

Speaking on the broader significance, Reddy said the IRF Goa Street Race Weekend positions Goa alongside iconic global street-racing destinations. He described the event as a statement of India’s readiness to host international-standard motorsport while reinforcing Goa’s ability to deliver world-class sporting spectacles with global visibility.

The race weekend is expected to generate significant economic and tourism benefits, with increased activity across hotels, transport services, food and beverage outlets and local businesses. Global broadcast exposure is also expected to further strengthen Goa’s brand value as a destination for major sporting and entertainment events.

Emphasising safety, Reddy stated that the circuit has been developed with FIA-standard temporary infrastructure, including reinforced barriers, advanced crash protection systems, dedicated medical and rescue teams, and comprehensive safety protocols. Rigorous pre-event testing and continuous monitoring during race days will ensure the highest safety standards for drivers, teams and spectators.

Reddy also acknowledged the proactive support of the Goa government and local authorities, stating that seamless coordination in planning, permissions and infrastructure made the temporary street circuit at Mopa possible.

Spectators can expect close-quarters racing, strategic overtaking zones and a festival-like atmosphere, with fan engagement activities, merchandise and food and beverage experiences complementing the on-track action. IRF has expressed its intent to make the Goa Street Race a recurring fixture, positioning Goa as a long-term cornerstone of India’s motorsport calendar.
