A Night with Nicolau Medina Ribas: Portuguese Musical Legacy Revived in Goa

Written by Intern Rency Gomes || Team Allycaral

Goa’s music lovers are set to experience a rare cultural revival as the Dona Paula-based Communicare Trust presents two special concerts dedicated to the rediscovered works of Portuguese composer Nicolau Medina Ribas. An early 20th-century composer, Ribas’ manuscripts were nearly lost forever after facing destruction at his estate in Porto. Preserved against the odds, these rescued compositions now return to the stage, offering audiences an intimate glimpse into a forgotten chapter of European musical history.

The concerts will be led by acclaimed Portuguese musicians — violinist Eliseu Silva and pianist Olga Amaro. Known for their sensitive interpretations of classical repertoire for violin and piano, the duo has performed extensively across Europe and has actively promoted Portuguese composers on international stages. Speaking about the project, Olga Amaro described the performances as “a moment of profound emotion and responsibility,” highlighting Goa as a space of shared history and cultural dialogue between Portugal and India.

According to Nalini Elvino de Sousa, Manager at Communicare Trust, the concerts offer more than musical excellence — they create a rare historical encounter connecting Goan audiences with an important yet lesser-known European composer. The initiative reflects Communicare Trust’s longstanding commitment to preserving and promoting artistic heritage through concerts, workshops, and educational programmes in Goa.

The first performance, A Night with Medina Ribas, will take place at the Black Box, Kala Academy, Panaji, on Friday, February 20, 2026, at 8:00 pm, with donation passes priced at ₹250. The second performance, Melody, Movement & More!, will be held at the historic Figueiredo Mansion in Loutolim on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 7:00 pm. This special evening includes a live performance alongside a curated three-course dining experience, with donation passes priced at ₹3000. Seats for both events are limited, and advance booking is recommended. Reservations can be made via WhatsApp at +91 9850871608 or +91 98817 46058 for the Kala Academy concert, and +91 96578 68090 or +91 98817 46058 for the Figueiredo Mansion performance.

MOG Sunday Talk: Flex Banners, ‘Airbnb Aesthetic’ and Goa’s Disappearing Traditional Street Lettering

Panaji’s streetscape is undergoing a visible transformation as digital flex signages inspired by what many describe as an ‘Airbnb aesthetic’ steadily replace traditional hand-painted boards across the city and other Goan towns. The shift has resulted in streets that increasingly resemble those in mainstream urban India, with local character giving way to a standardised visual language. Alongside this aesthetic change, traditional sign painters are quietly disappearing, and with them, a long-standing craft tradition.

This evolving urban landscape formed the backdrop of a recent MOG Sunday session on Indian Street Lettering held at the Museum of Goa. Award-winning typeface designer and lettering artist Pooja Saxena used the occasion to draw attention to Goa’s street lettering as a living visual archive of its architectural and cultural history.

Saxena warned that the proliferation of digital flex signs, typically LED banner displays stretched over metal frames, is creating an ‘Airbnb aesthetic’ in which cities begin to look indistinguishable from one another. As she explained, when walking through such spaces, it becomes difficult to identify a city by its visual cues. The loss, she stressed, is not merely aesthetic but economic as well. When hand-painted signs disappear, so do the livelihoods attached to them. For Saxena, these signs should not survive only as museum exhibits; their true meaning lies in remaining functional, expressive elements within everyday public spaces.

Discussing her book project India Street Lettering: A Journey Through Typographic Craft & Culture, Saxena observed that lettering styles often reflect the historical period in which neighbourhoods developed. In Panaji, she pointed out, Art Deco and Art Nouveau influences in signage align closely with the city’s architectural heritage. Goa’s visual identity, she noted, is shaped by distinctive elements such as azulejos, woodwork and three-dimensional lettering. In conversation with Goa-based visual artist Avani Tanya, she explained how context shapes the way design elements are interpreted, while the coastal climate affects materials, making frequent repainting both necessary and a visible sign of ongoing care.

According to Saxena, street lettering extends beyond functionality; it operates as a gestural expression shaped by the human hand. Reflecting on increasing reliance on digital tools, she admitted concerns about losing touch with manual craft and handwriting. Her book focuses on letterforms created through analogue techniques, including hand painting and specialised processes, underscoring the intentionality and skill embedded in these forms.

Saxena expressed hope that her work would inspire people to look more closely at their local marketplaces and public spaces. By encouraging greater attention to everyday lettering, she believes citizens may begin to appreciate its cultural significance and advocate for its preservation. As Goa navigates the balance between modernisation and heritage, the conversation around street lettering raises broader questions about how cities can retain their identity while adapting to changing times.

Goa Hosts Spectacular Round 4 as Hyman & Wohlwend Power Goa Aces JA Racing to Home Victory

Goa transformed into a high-energy motorsport arena on 15th February 2026 as Round 4 of the Indian Racing Festival brought electrifying street racing action to the city. With strong crowds, growing local fandom and a vibrant race-day atmosphere, the Goa street circuit once again highlighted the expanding appeal of professional motorsport in India. The headline moment of the weekend saw Raoul Hyman and Fabienne Wohlwend combine skill and composure to guide Goa Aces JA Racing to a dramatic relay-format victory with a combined time of 42:11.779.

Hon’ble Chief Minister Pramod Sawant congratulated the home team and emphasised the importance of hosting the championship in the state, noting that such events strengthen Goa’s ambition to emerge as a motorsport and sports tourism destination capable of staging international-standard competitions. Akhilesh Reddy, Chairman and Managing Director of Racing Promotions Pvt Ltd, praised Goa’s enthusiastic support and highlighted how street circuits bring the sport closer to the public, helping build an organic fan base and future talent pathways.

The event was elevated by the presence of prominent team owners including John Abraham, Kichcha Sudeep, Naga Chaitanya and Sourav Ganguly, blending sporting excellence with entertainment appeal and adding star power to the weekend spectacle.

Hyman laid the foundation for victory with a clinical opening stint, clocking the fastest lap of 53.527 seconds and building a steady advantage on the tight and unforgiving street circuit. Navigating traffic with precision, he entered the mandatory driver-swap window in firm control and handed over the car with nearly a 20-second lead. However, the race complexion changed when a safety car intervention erased the advantage and bunched up the field.

Wohlwend faced immediate pressure on the restart but responded with composure beyond expectation. Defending confidently against close challengers, including Ruhaan Alva, she rebuilt the gap and maintained control through to the chequered flag. Her performance not only sealed the win but also made her only the second female race winner in the championship’s history. Behind them, Kichcha’s Kings Bengaluru finished second, narrowly ahead of Speed Demons Delhi, while pole-sitters Kolkata Royal Tigers were forced to retire early due to a wheel issue.

The victory marked the 10th win for Goa Aces JA Racing in the championship and reinforced the importance of teamwork and discipline in a relay format where fortunes can change instantly. After Round 4, Goa Aces JA Racing lead the standings with 145 points, followed closely by Speed Demons Delhi on 144, keeping the title battle finely poised as the season progresses.
