Design for Justice Programme at MOG Brings Goa’s Justice Stakeholders Together

Justice-related work in Goa is often carried out in isolation, with communities, organisations and institutions addressing similar social issues without sufficient coordination. This observation emerged during the Design for Justice programme held at the Museum of Goa (MOG) in January 2026 as part of the MOG Sundays series. The two-day programme created a shared space for dialogue, reflection and collaboration among stakeholders working across Goa’s justice landscape.

Bringing together civil society organisations, students, designers, researchers and practitioners, the programme focused on how people-centred and design-led approaches can help shape more inclusive and accessible justice systems. Discussions centred on mapping existing justice-related efforts in the state, sharing community-led interventions and identifying opportunities for collaboration across sectors.

Aditi Nayak, research associate at Justice Adda, explained that the programme grew out of reflections following the 2023 Design for Justice Conference in Goa. While there is a significant amount of justice-related work happening across the state, the absence of shared platforms often leads to fragmented efforts. The aim, she said, was to slow down, bring these efforts into conversation with one another and begin identifying shared priorities rooted in lived community experiences.

Participants presented initiatives addressing a wide range of issues, including environmental protection, land rights, mental health, gender justice, tribal rights, governance and the social impact of emerging technologies. Although the focus areas varied, many initiatives were grounded in everyday realities — from coastal communities responding to ecological degradation to residents navigating governance and legal processes that directly affect their lives.

The programme featured voices from law, academia, human rights, environmental advocacy and technology. Speakers such as Asawari Nayak, advocate Aurobindo Gomes Pereira, human rights activist Cyril Fernandes, environmental lawyer Sreeja Chakraborty, technology practitioner Karn Malhotra, Maya de Souza and former Children’s Court judge Sayonara Tellis Laad shared insights drawn from their professional and community-based work. Their discussions examined how justice is encountered beyond courtrooms and policies, in daily interactions with systems and institutions.

Drawing from Justice Adda’s approach, Aditi highlighted the importance of focusing on how people experience justice in practice. Visual tools, storytelling and design methods, she noted, can help simplify complex legal information, making it more accessible and usable for communities, and bridging gaps between institutions and the people they are meant to serve.

A recurring theme throughout the sessions was the understanding of justice as an ecosystem rather than the responsibility of any single sector. Participants pointed to challenges such as limited resources, barriers within governance systems, difficulties in sustaining long-term work and insider–outsider dynamics. At the same time, the conversations underscored the need for better coordination, shared resources and sustained engagement among communities, civil society organisations, institutions and young practitioners.

Organisers said the programme aimed to lay the groundwork for future collaboration, with the relationships and ideas formed during the two days expected to inform more coordinated, inclusive and community-responsive approaches to justice in Goa.

Goa marked the Feast of the Three Kings with deep devotion and vibrant cultural expression across the picturesque villages of Cansaulim, Chandor, and Reis Magos, bringing together local communities and visitors in a shared observance of faith, tradition, and heritage. The annual celebration, closely associated with the Christian feast of Epiphany, continues to hold a special place in Goa’s cultural and spiritual calendar.

The Goa Tourism Development Corporation team led by Chairman, GTDC, Shri Kedar J. Naik, along with Managing Director Shri Kuldeep Arolkar, General Manager Shri Gavin Dias, Deputy General Manager Shri Deepak Narvekar, and other officials actively participated in the celebrations at Reis Magos. Solemn masses and processions held at local churches formed the spiritual core of the festivities, fostering a strong sense of devotion and communal unity.

Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Shri Rohan A. Khaunte, highlighted the importance of such celebrations in preserving Goa’s identity, noting that cultural and spiritual festivals form an integral part of the State’s tourism landscape. He observed that these events reflect Goa’s deep-rooted faith, harmony, and community participation, while offering visitors an opportunity to experience authentic local traditions.

Chairman, GTDC, Shri Kedar J. Naik, emphasised the role of community-based festivals in presenting Goa’s cultural identity, stating that such celebrations help connect visitors with local traditions while ensuring that cultural practices continue to thrive within their natural community settings.

A key highlight of the celebration was the evocative reenactment of the journey of the Magi, with three young men symbolically portraying the Wise Men as they carried traditional offerings through village streets. Traditional music, colourful processions, and community-led events added vibrancy and emotional depth to the festivities, drawing participation from all age groups.

The outreach of the celebration was further strengthened through a focused promotional campaign using digital platforms and influencer collaborations, enabling the cultural significance of the Three Kings Feast to reach audiences beyond the State. Goa Tourism also set up an information canopy at the church premises, where visitors were provided details on tourism services and offered refreshments and mementoes, enhancing their overall experience.

The Feast of the Three Kings 2026 once again underscored Goa’s rich spiritual traditions and strong community bonds, reinforcing its identity as a destination where faith, culture, and tradition continue to be celebrated in a meaningful and inclusive manner.

Phirse Kitaab: GIO Goa’s Statewide Reading Movement Culminates in a Vibrant Literature Festival

Written by Tanisha Cardozo || Team Allycaral

The Girls Islamic Organisation (GIO), a socio-educational organisation of young women committed to the moral and intellectual reconstruction of society, successfully concluded its statewide reading and literacy campaign ‘Phirse Kitaab’ with a vibrant Literature Festival in Goa. Rooted in GIO’s vision of nurturing informed, thoughtful and socially responsible individuals, the initiative reaffirmed the enduring relevance of books in an increasingly digital world.

Conducted from 7th to 27th December 2025, Phirse Kitaab unfolded as a twenty-day reading movement that reached children, youth, parents and educators across the state. Through school sessions, parenting interactions and educator dialogues, the campaign encouraged reading beyond academic requirements and highlighted its role as a lifelong habit essential for intellectual growth and social awareness. Read-aloud sessions, reading retreats, meet-the-author interactions, library visits and informal corner meets allowed participants to engage with books in reflective and community-driven spaces, reinforcing the idea that reading flourishes when it becomes part of everyday life.

The culmination of the campaign was marked by the Phirse Kitaab Literature Festival held on 27th December 2025, which brought together readers, writers, educators and families in a shared celebration of literature and dialogue. The festival featured discussions on creating student-centric libraries, with insights shared by Elijah D’Souza of Booktique Goa, and a thought-provoking panel on literature as a tool for social change. Moderated by Shoib Shaikh, the panel explored how literature shapes social consciousness, preserves collective memory and encourages critical engagement, with active participation from the audience.

Storytelling and creative sessions highlighted the emotional and imaginative power of stories across age groups, while art-based literacy activities enabled participants to express ideas through collaborative drawing and book design. Children, students and families engaged in interactive sessions that demonstrated the cognitive, emotional and developmental benefits of reading, while parents and educators explored research-backed strategies to build strong reading habits at home.

The festival also celebrated linguistic and literary diversity through an open poetry recital featuring works in English, Hindi, Marathi and Konkani, bringing together emerging voices and established poets. A lively literacy activity corner featuring poetry boards, blackout poetry, silent reading zones and thematic displays tracing the origins of books across cultures drew significant interest and participation.

The concluding programme marked a significant milestone with the launch of books by six emerging Goan authors, who shared reflections on their creative journeys and read excerpts from their works. Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Shri Damodar Mauzo urged writers to write with sincerity, promote local languages and practice discernment in reading, while GIO Goa’s leadership reiterated that Phirse Kitaab is not a one-time event but the beginning of a sustained reading movement across the state.

Through Phirse Kitaab, GIO Goa reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening a culture of reading, reflection and dialogue. By engaging communities across generations, the campaign demonstrated that books remain powerful tools for personal growth, social awareness and meaningful change, laying the foundation for a more thoughtful and literate society.
