Goa, a small state on the western coast of India, has a rich history and heritage that is evident in its architecture, culture, and traditions. One of the most significant contributions of Goa to the world is St. Joseph Vaz, the first and only Goan to be canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church.
St. Joseph Vaz was born on April 21, 1651, in Benaulim, a small village in Goa. He was the third of six children born to Cristovao Vaz and Maria de Miranda. Joseph’s parents were devout Catholics who instilled in him a strong faith and values.
Joseph received his early education at the local village school and later studied at the Jesuit College in Rachol, Goa. He was an excellent student and showed a keen interest in theology and philosophy.
Joseph was ordained as a priest in 1676 and soon felt the call to serve as a missionary in Sri Lanka. At the time, Sri Lanka was under Dutch rule, and Catholicism was facing severe persecution. Despite the risks, Joseph traveled to Sri Lanka in 1687, disguising himself as a beggar to avoid detection by the Dutch authorities.
Joseph’s missionary work in Sri Lanka was marked by bravery, perseverance, and selfless service. He learned the local language and customs, and started preaching the Gospel. He established several Catholic churches and communities, and his missionary work flourished despite the persecution.
Joseph Vaz was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1995 and canonized as a saint by Pope Francis in 2015. He is the first and only Goan to be canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church.
St. Joseph Vaz’s legacy is a testament to his devotion to the faith and his selfless service to humanity. He is revered as a patron saint of Sri Lanka and a model of devotion and perseverance for Catholics around the world.
St. Joseph Vaz is a source of pride for Goa and India. His life and legacy are an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the importance of faith, devotion, and selfless service. As we celebrate the feast of St. Joseph Vaz, let us honor his memory and continue to draw inspiration from his remarkable life and legacy.
Prayer and Reflection
As we reflect on the life and legacy of St. Joseph Vaz, let us pray for the courage and devotion to spread the Gospel, just as he did. May his example inspire us to live our faith with conviction and joy, and may we always remember the sacrifices he made for the sake of the Gospel.
“Dear Lord, we thank you for the example of St. Joseph Vaz, who dedicated his life to spreading your Gospel. May his devotion and perseverance inspire us to live our faith with courage and conviction. Amen.”
January 16, 1967, marked a pivotal day in Goa’s history, as the state held a historic referendum, popularly known as the Opinion Poll Goa. The poll was a culmination of a long-standing debate between two main parties: the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), which favored merger with Maharashtra, and the United Goans Party (UGP), which advocated for maintaining Goa’s separate identity.
After India gained independence in 1947, Goa remained a Portuguese colony until December 19, 1961, when it was liberated by the Indian Army. Following liberation, Goa, along with Daman and Diu, was administered as a Union Territory of India. However, the question of Goa’s future status remained a topic of debate.
The Referendum
The Opinion Poll Goa was held to determine whether Goa should merge with Maharashtra or remain a separate entity. The referendum offered two options:
Merger with Maharashtra
Remain a Union Territory of India
The poll was conducted under the supervision of the Election Commission of India, with 81.77% of eligible voters casting their ballots.
Arguments For and Against Merger
Those in favor of merger argued that Goa was too small to administer itself and that merging with Maharashtra would bring economic benefits and cultural ties. They believed that Goa’s economy would flourish with access to Maharashtra’s larger market and resources.
On the other hand, opponents of merger believed that Goa’s unique cultural identity would be lost, and that the state would become a “backwater district of Maharashtra”. They argued that Goa’s distinct history, language, and customs would be compromised if it were to merge with Maharashtra.
The Results
The referendum results were announced on January 16, 1967. A total of 54.20% of voters opted against merger, while 43.50% voted in favor. The anti-mergerists won by a margin of 34,021 votes.
Aftermath and Impact
The Opinion Poll Goa was a significant event in the state’s history, shaping its future and identity. The results demonstrated the strong desire among Goans to maintain their separate identity and cultural heritage.
In the aftermath of the poll, Goa continued to be administered as a Union Territory of India. On May 30, 1987, Goa was granted statehood, becoming the 25th state of India.
Legacy of the Opinion Poll Goa
The Opinion Poll Goa was a defining moment in Goa’s history, showcasing the power of democratic participation and the importance of preserving cultural heritage. The poll’s outcome has had a lasting impact on Goa’s identity and development, shaping the state’s future as a distinct and vibrant entity within the Indian Union.

Panaji, January 15, 2025 β The Department of Tourism, Goa, organized a comprehensive day-long conclave for tourism stakeholders. Chaired by the Honβble Minister of Tourism, Shri Rohan Khaunte, and Director of Tourism, Shri Suneel Anchipaka, IAS, the event aimed to counter misinformation about tourist footfall figures and reaffirm Goaβs position as a premier tourism destination.
The conclave brought together key stakeholders from diverse sectors, including cruise tourism, airport operations, charter flights, beach tourism, transport, and accommodation. Members of the Goa Tourism Board including Mark Mendes, Ernest Dias, Carlos de Sousa; TTAG President Jack Sukhija, and other industry representatives discussed strategies to enhance Goaβs tourism experience and ensure sustainable growth.
Addressing the media after the stakeholders conclave, Shri. Suneel Anchipaka, IAS, Director of Tourism stated that the state saw a notable 21% growth which promises a very positive and promising trend of tourism in Goa, with a substantial 54% increase in tourists visiting in December 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. The quarterly growth from October to December stood at 38%. While domestic tourist numbers increased by 22%, foreign tourist numbers grew by 3%.β These provisional figures show that there is strong growth in terms of numbers.
Director Suneel Anchipaka IAS further said that the data has been compiled from credible sources, including airport arrivals, Konkan Railways, and the Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) and other transport operators. These statistics unequivocally indicate a robust growth in Goa’s tourism sector, reaffirming its position as a preferred destination.
The director further stated that Dabolim Airport saw a significant surge in passenger traffic, with a remarkable 27% growth in December 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. He said that the government is focusing on quality over quantity and that the hotel occupancy remained highest this season which shows that high-end tourists are preferring Goa.
Honβble Tourism Minister Shri Rohan Khaunte stated βIn the year 2023, Goa received 81,75,460 domestic tourists and 4,52,702 international tourists, totalling 86,28,162 visitors. Whereas in the year 2024, provisional figures show that Goa welcomed 99,41,285 domestic tourists and around 4,67,911 international tourists, bringing the total to 1,04,09,196 visitors.β
The Minister highlighted that during the last week of December 2024, Goa saw a record 200 flights arriving daily. Despite the broader Asia tourism sector facing a -18% growth rate post-COVID-19, Goaβs 3% growth in foreign tourist arrivals signifies the stateβs resilience and adaptability.
The Tourism Minister also addressed the recent criticism from social media influencers, attributing it to unverified data released by the China Economic Information Centre. He expressed that Goa is performing much better than the national average; has got a great resilience in adaptability in the competitive tourism landscape and as a year to year-round destination we are also looking at increasing off season business.
The Minister acknowledged challenges such as overtourism, particularly at popular beaches like Baga and Calangute, which have faced overcrowding, waste management issues, and occasional conflicts between locals and tourists. These challenges, along with the impact of budget tourism, require a focused and proactive approach to maintain Goaβs infrastructure and reputation.
To enhance the overall tourist experience, the government is adopting technology across various services. Platforms such as Goa Miles and the Goa Taxi app are integral to improving transport services. The Minister assured that concerns related to taxi operations are being actively addressed through technology-driven solutions. Additionally, efforts are being made to educate visitors about Goaβs cultural values, traditions, and boundaries, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation among tourists.
Responding to concerns about a perceived decline in tourism, the Minister emphasized that several hotels achieved near 100% occupancy this year, accompanied by impressive Average Room Rates (AAR). He further noted that, under the Ease of Doing Business initiative, the number of registered hotels in the state has increased from approximately 3,000 in 2022 to nearly 9,000 in 2024 across various categories, ensuring visitors have a broader range of accommodation options, including homestays.
The minister further stated that issues raised during the stakeholder meeting will be taken up at the upcoming Goa Tourism Board meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Shri Pramod Sawant. An actionable plan will be formulated in collaboration with the Chief Secretary and other officials and presented to the Chief Minister for implementation.
βWe strongly believe in the ethos of Atithi Devo Bhava, where every guest is treated with utmost respect and hospitality. Our commitment is to uphold this principle while ensuring Goa remains a premier destination that offers unique experiences, vibrant culture, and world-class services,β the Minister concluded.
