Goa: St Xavier’s College witnessed a vibrant celebration of creativity, science and entrepreneurship with the Festival of Innovation: Goa’s Young Innovators, organised by the Department of Chemistry in collaboration with the Institution’s Innovation Cell..
The event was organised as part of the Birth Centenary celebrations of Late Rev. Dr. Nicolau Pereira and brought together young innovators from educational institutions across Goa.
The festival was inaugurated by Shri Kabir Shirgaonkar, Director of the Startup & IT Promotion Cell (SITPC) and Director, Information Technology, Electronics & Communication, Government of Goa. During his interaction with participants, Shirgaonkar shared valuable insights into the various startup schemes and opportunities available to young innovators in Goa, encouraging students to explore the possibilities of transforming innovative ideas into entrepreneurial ventures.
In her welcome address, Officiating Principal Ms Ursula Barreto described the festival as a celebration of thinkers, creators and budding innovators. She highlighted how innovative ideas can encourage entrepreneurship and startups while contributing to the creation of future job creators.
Ms Janesline Fernandes, Head of the Department of Chemistry, emphasised that the festival was not merely a competition but an opportunity for young minds to experiment, innovate and showcase their creativity.
Adding an inspirational dimension to the programme was Mr Bhikaji Gawade, alumnus of the college, STEM enthusiast and innovator. In his session, Gawade encouraged students to recognise their inner strengths and emphasised the importance of understanding one’s own attributes in the journey towards becoming a successful innovator.
The festival saw participation from 28 institutions across Goa, turning the campus into a lively arena of ideas, experimentation and innovation.
Students presented a diverse range of projects and models, including floor-cleaning and fire-fighting robots, road-safety sensors, Electrosetinel – a smart safety device for ladies, a fire-fighting car, anti-sleep goggles, an Eco-Ear model converting sound energy into electricity, bioplastics, carbon absorbers and DIY tests, among several other creations.
The projects reflected the students’ ability to apply scientific concepts and creative thinking to practical challenges, while highlighting the growing interest in STEM, technology and entrepreneurship among young people.
The event was coordinated by Ms Sheryl D’Cruz and marked the 11th edition of the Festival of Innovation, continuing its tradition of providing young innovators with a platform to present their ideas, exchange knowledge and explore new possibilities.
The festival stood as a celebration of curiosity and creativity, giving Goa’s young minds an opportunity to demonstrate that innovative thinking can be the starting point for meaningful solutions and future enterprises.
