Porvorim: The historic ‘Gulo’ landmark in Porvorim is being restored as part of efforts to preserve the area’s history and heritage for future generations.
Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Shri Rohan A. Khaunte recently inspected the ongoing restoration work and discussed proposed changes and improvements to the landmark.
Speaking during the inspection, Khaunte highlighted the historical importance of Gulo and its connection with generations of people in Porvorim.
“Gulo is a part of our history and heritage, and generations of people in Porvorim have grown up knowing it as an important point of reference.”
According to Khaunte, the significance of Gulo dates back to the period between 1910 and 1935, when the Serula Comunidade was the biggest body and Porvorim was located there. He said the location marked the road towards Mapusa and Panaji.
“This is a part of our history from a time before Goa’s Liberation and even before India’s Independence,” Khaunte said, adding that the historic significance of Gulo is also reflected in the name ‘Gulya Kade.’
He stressed the importance of ensuring that younger generations understand the landmark’s history and significance, noting that senior citizens in the area continue to remember its importance.
Khaunte also acknowledged the role played by the people of Porvorim and the Panchayat in preserving the heritage site.
“By restoring Gulo, we are keeping alive the memories, stories and identity of Porvorim.”
During his visit, Khaunte discussed changes and improvements to the restoration work with those involved in the project. He expressed hope that the landmark could be completed and inaugurated before Ganesh Chaturthi.
The restoration is being positioned as an effort to preserve an important local landmark and ensure that its historical connection with Porvorim continues to be remembered by future generations.
