New Delhi: A complete ban on social media for children may not achieve the intended results, according to a discussion held on August 20 involving representatives from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), civil society organisations and consultancy Space2Grow.
The discussion focused on the growing concerns surrounding children’s safety in the digital world and explored ways to create a safer online environment without completely excluding young users from social media platforms.
Participants reportedly argued that simply shutting children out of social media may not be a practical or effective long-term solution. Instead, the focus was placed on creating stronger safeguards and accountability mechanisms for digital platforms.
Among the key measures discussed was the implementation of age-gating, which could help ensure that children access online platforms and content appropriate for their age group.
Another major recommendation was the introduction of a legally enforceable “duty of care” for social media companies. Such a framework would place greater responsibility on platforms to protect younger users and take proactive steps to reduce exposure to harmful or inappropriate content.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of stronger parental controls, allowing parents and guardians to play a more active role in monitoring and managing their children’s digital experiences.
As children increasingly grow up in a digitally connected world, the debate around online safety continues to evolve. Experts and stakeholders are now looking beyond the idea of an outright ban and towards a more balanced approach that combines access, protection, accountability and digital awareness.
The conversation underlines the need for technology companies, policymakers, parents, educators and civil society to work together to ensure that children can benefit from the digital world while being protected from its potential risks.
