Panjim, August 8, 2026: Goa’s rich cultural heritage will take centre stage this Independence Day as Malar Bonderam 2026 brings together tradition, history, music, food and community spirit for a 12-hour celebration in Malar, Divar Island.
Organised by the St Mathias Sports Club, Malar, the festival will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 10 am to 10 pm.
The new-look celebration was unveiled at a press conference in Panjim, with the programme presented by President Remus Gomes, Secretary Remy de Almeida and Festakar Marius Fernandes. Dr Gwendolyn de Ornelas will serve as compère, with Saish Prabhudesai, Prakash Kamat and Lucius de Almeida also supporting the celebrations.
450 Years of Tradition, A New Vision
Bonderam is among Goa’s oldest and most distinctive community festivals, with a history dating back more than 450 years to the Portuguese era.
The festival’s origins are associated with the use of flags to mark village boundaries and settle land-related disputes. Over generations, however, these symbols of division have transformed into symbols of unity, friendship, identity and community celebration.
Malar Bonderam 2026 seeks to preserve this historical legacy while presenting the festival in a way that connects with younger generations.
A Full Day of Goan Culture
The celebrations will begin at 10 am with traditional lamp lighting, followed by a series of cultural and community activities.
The schedule includes Mollam-making and traditional Patoieos-stemming workshops at 10.30 am, followed by GED Talks at 11 am.
At 12.30 pm, visitors can experience traditional Goan food accompanied by acoustic music, offering an opportunity to enjoy local flavours in a community setting.
One of the key attractions will be the Pasoi Heritage Walk at 3 pm, which will feature traditional flags, brass bands, street plays, Kottieacho Nach and Goan sweets.
The afternoon programme will continue with Fancy Dress and Konkani Songs at 4 pm, before the much-awaited Grand Bonderam Float Parade at 5 pm.
The celebrations will conclude with a musical evening featuring Mark Revlon and Sonia Sirsat, beginning at 7.30 pm, before the festival concludes at 10 pm.
Bringing Historic Malar Alive
The Pasoi Heritage Walk is designed to offer visitors an immersive experience of Malar’s history and living traditions through music, storytelling, traditional performances and village hospitality.
The festival aims to go beyond entertainment by creating a platform where different generations can reconnect with Goa’s cultural identity.
From traditional food and music to village stories, crafts, performances and the iconic Bonderam floats, the celebration seeks to showcase the many elements that make Goa’s heritage distinctive.
Connecting Generations Through Culture
Organisers believe that preserving cultural traditions also requires introducing them to younger generations.
Malar Bonderam 2026 therefore combines traditional elements with a contemporary approach, creating a celebration that can appeal to Goans, visitors and members of the Goan diaspora.
As Goa celebrates Independence Day on August 15, Malar will offer a unique opportunity to celebrate both the country’s independence and the enduring cultural traditions of the state.
The St Mathias Sports Club has invited Goans, visitors and the Goan diaspora to gather at Malar, Divar Island, and experience the 450-year-old Bonderam tradition in a new yet deeply rooted format.
