Chennai: The divorce proceedings involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay and his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam have come to an end after Sangeetha withdrew her divorce petition.
Sangeetha appeared before the family court through video conferencing and submitted her reasons for withdrawing the petition. Following her decision, the court formally closed the case on Friday.
The divorce petition was initially filed by Sangeetha in February 2026 before the family court in Chengalpattu, where she had sought dissolution of her marriage with Vijay, citing irreconcilable differences.
The matter had witnessed multiple adjournments over the past few months. On June 15, proceedings were postponed after Sangeetha indicated her intention to withdraw the petition. She had again appeared through video conference and informed the court about her decision.
The case was later scheduled for further hearing on August 7. Earlier, proceedings were also delayed as neither Vijay nor Sangeetha appeared before the court, with their respective lawyers representing them.
With the withdrawal of the petition, the family court has now officially closed the matter.
Vijay and Sangeetha’s Three-Decade Relationship
Vijay and Sangeetha’s relationship dates back nearly three decades. The couple got married on August 25, 1999, in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in Chennai.
The couple has two children — a son born in 2000 and a daughter born in 2005.
Speculation about difficulties in their marriage had emerged in recent years after Sangeetha was absent from several public appearances involving Vijay. Similar discussions resurfaced later when she did not attend major TVK political events.
However, the couple had not publicly commented extensively on the speculation.
The development comes at a significant time in Vijay’s political journey as his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as a major political force in Tamil Nadu.
