Actor Jyotika recently shared an interesting insight into her early career days with husband and actor Suriya, revealing how their professional journeys evolved over the years.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Jyotika recalled that during the initial phase of their careers, she was a bigger star in Tamil cinema and earned significantly more than Suriya.
The actress revealed that she was once paid three times Suriya’s salary, but jokingly added that the situation has now completely changed.
“Now, it’s 30 times less,” Jyotika said humorously, leaving Suriya laughing during their conversation.
The couple looked back at the period when they worked together on Kaakha Kaakha (2003), a film that became a major turning point in Suriya’s career. At the time, Jyotika was already one of Tamil cinema’s leading actresses with several successful films, while Suriya was still establishing himself as a solo hero.
Interestingly, Jyotika revealed that she had suggested Suriya’s name to director Gautham Vasudev Menon for Kaakha Kaakha. The film went on to become a career-defining project for Suriya and strengthened his position as one of Tamil cinema’s leading actors.
During the conversation, Jyotika also praised Suriya for his approach towards equality in their relationship, calling him a “green flag.”
She highlighted that Suriya believes in equality both at home and in professional life.
“He’s remarkable as a man, as a husband, and as an actor. There is an equality in his head, and I feel you have to be born with that,” Jyotika shared.
Speaking about their life together, she explained that their relationship is built on mutual respect and partnership rather than traditional gender roles.
She said that whether it is cooking, filmmaking, raising children, or travelling together, they share responsibilities and celebrate each other’s growth.
Suriya and Jyotika have remained one of the most admired couples in the Tamil film industry. The duo first appeared together in Poovellam Kettuppar (1999) and later worked together in films including Uyirile Kalanthathu, Kaakha Kaakha, Perazhagan, Maayavi, and Sillunu Oru Kaadhal.
The couple got married in 2006 and have two children. After taking a break from films to focus on family, Jyotika made her comeback with 36 Vayadhinile (2015) and has continued to take on diverse roles across industries.
Today, both Suriya and Jyotika continue to inspire fans with their successful careers and their supportive partnership.
