Actor Mrunal Thakur has joined a growing list of Indian celebrities taking a firm stand against the misuse of artificial intelligence to create deepfake content using their identity.
The actor has issued a formal warning to individuals involved in creating or sharing manipulated videos, images or other AI-generated material featuring her likeness without permission. Calling such misuse “illegal and unacceptable,” Mrunal made it clear that any further violation would lead to legal action.
In her statement, Mrunal said, “Creating or sharing deepfake content using my likeness is illegal and unacceptable. Consider this your formal notice to stop immediately. Any further misuse of my identity will result in legal action.”
The warning highlights the increasing concerns around AI-generated content, where advanced technology can be used to digitally alter a person’s face, voice or appearance without consent.
Mrunal’s statement comes at a time when several Indian actors have approached legal authorities to safeguard their personality rights and prevent unauthorised commercial or harmful use of their identities.
Celebrities including Akshay Kumar, Varun Dhawan, Anil Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty, Preity Zinta, Kartik Aaryan and Suniel Shetty have also raised concerns over AI-generated deepfakes and identity misuse.
In a recent legal development, actor Preity Zinta approached the Bombay High Court regarding AI-generated deepfake content using her identity. The court directed major digital platforms, including Google and Meta, to establish a mechanism for addressing and removing such unauthorised content.
With AI technology becoming increasingly accessible, concerns around privacy, consent and digital identity protection continue to grow. Industry experts believe stronger regulations and awareness are essential to prevent misuse while ensuring responsible use of artificial intelligence.
Mrunal Thakur’s warning serves as a reminder that digital identity and personal likeness are protected rights, and misuse of AI tools can have serious legal consequences.
