Goa: Alzheimer’s disease, the most common cause of dementia, is a progressive neurological disorder that gradually impairs memory, thinking, behaviour and the ability to carry out everyday activities. However, advances in early diagnosis and treatment are offering new hope to patients and their families.
Dr. Amrut S D, Consultant – Neurology at Manipal Hospital Goa, highlighted the importance of recognising early warning signs and seeking timely medical attention to improve outcomes.
According to Dr. Amrut, common early symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease include persistent memory loss, difficulty finding words, poor judgement and decision-making, personality changes, and problems with planning or completing routine tasks.
He stressed that identifying these symptoms early can lead to timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment, helping patients maintain their independence for longer.
Advances in Early Detection
Dr. Amrut explained that significant progress has been made in diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease at an earlier stage.
Modern diagnostic tools now include advanced blood tests that measure biomarkers such as plasma phosphorylated tau (p-tau217 and p-tau181), amyloid-beta, and neurofilament light chain (NfL). These tests, combined with advanced brain imaging techniques such as MRI and PET scans, allow doctors to detect Alzheimer’s disease with greater accuracy—even before symptoms become severe.
New Treatment Options
While currently available medications help manage symptoms, Dr. Amrut emphasised that non-drug interventions remain equally important in Alzheimer’s care.
He recommended:
- Cognitive stimulation activities
- Regular physical exercise
- Social engagement
- Caregiver education and support
These measures help maintain cognitive function, improve emotional well-being and enhance patients’ overall quality of life.
Dr. Amrut also highlighted Donanemab, a recently approved treatment in India for selected patients with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. The medication works by targeting amyloid plaques in the brain and has shown promise in slowing cognitive decline.
Importance of Timely Care
Dr. Amrut concluded by emphasising that Alzheimer’s disease should not be ignored or dismissed as a normal part of ageing.
“Early diagnosis, timely treatment, and comprehensive supportive care can help people with Alzheimer’s maintain their independence and improve their quality of life.”
With growing awareness, better diagnostic technologies and emerging therapies, healthcare professionals believe patients now have greater opportunities to manage Alzheimer’s disease more effectively than ever before.
