In a significant move to strengthen safety across India’s ride-hailing ecosystem, Uber has unveiled a range of new safety innovations, including the industry-first Record My Ride feature and Ambulance Assistance, reinforcing its commitment to safer mobility for both riders and drivers.
The announcement was made as part of Uber’s ongoing effort to raise safety standards through technology, strategic partnerships and enhanced emergency support.
Record My Ride: Secure In-Cab Video Recording
One of the headline features is Record My Ride, which allows drivers to securely record encrypted in-cab video using their smartphones directly within the Uber Driver app whenever they feel unsafe during a trip.
The recordings are encrypted from end to end, meaning neither the driver nor Uber can access them unless the driver voluntarily submits the recording while reporting a safety incident. This ensures privacy while providing crucial evidence if required.
Ambulance Assistance Integrated into the App
Uber has also partnered with Dial 4242 to launch Ambulance Assistance, enabling riders and drivers involved in an accident to quickly request emergency medical services.
The feature is accessible through Uber’s existing 24×7 Safety Line, helping reduce response times during emergencies.
Additional Safety Enhancements
Uber has introduced several other features aimed at improving safety on every trip:
- Don’t Type & Drive: The Uber Driver app now restricts manual typing while a vehicle is moving, encouraging drivers to pull over safely before responding to messages.
- Set Your Own PIN: Riders can now create and manage personalised trip verification PINs, giving them greater control over trip authentication before every ride.
Building on Existing Safety Innovations
The latest rollout builds upon Uber’s existing portfolio of safety tools, including:
- RideCheck
- Audio Recording
- Women Rider Preference
- Helmet Selfie Verification
- Seatbelt Reminders
- Safety Preferences
- Phone and Address Anonymisation
- 24×7 Safety Line
Many of these innovations were first introduced by Uber before becoming standard expectations across the ride-hailing industry.
Government Welcomes the Initiative
Nitin Gadkari praised Uber’s continued collaboration with the Ministry through the Sadak Suraksha Abhiyaan.
He highlighted that following traffic rules, wearing helmets and seatbelts, and leveraging technology can significantly reduce road fatalities while making Indian roads safer.
Uber’s Vision for Safer Mobility
Speaking about the initiative, Uber India & South Asia Head of Safety Operations Sooraj Nair said that safety innovations should become the industry’s baseline rather than a competitive differentiator.
He emphasised that Uber hopes these new features encourage the broader ride-hailing industry to continually improve safety standards.
With these latest additions, Uber continues investing in technology-driven safety solutions and emergency response systems designed to make every journey more secure.
