Veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, one of the most influential figures in Indian cinema, passed away on Wednesday following a prolonged illness. He was 84.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay visited Bharathiraja’s residence in Neelangarai, Chennai, to pay his final respects and announced that the legendary filmmaker’s funeral procession would be accorded full State honours.
The Chief Minister also met the bereaved family members and expressed his condolences. In a message shared on social media, Vijay described Bharathiraja’s passing as a monumental loss to Tamil cinema and paid tribute to his extraordinary contribution to filmmaking.
Several prominent personalities from the film industry gathered at Bharathiraja’s residence to honour the late director. Among them were Radikaa Sarathkumar, Nirosha, Sivakumar, Gangai Amaren and director-politician Seeman.
Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also paid tribute, describing Bharathiraja as a visionary who transformed Tamil cinema by bringing village life and realistic storytelling to the big screen. Stalin noted that films such as 16 Vayathinile, Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Sigappu Rojakkal, Alaigal Oivathillai, Muthal Mariyathai, Kadalora Kavithaigal, Vedham Pudhithu and Karuthamma remain timeless classics in the history of Tamil cinema.
He further highlighted Bharathiraja’s deep love for Tamil culture and his efforts in championing the rights and identity of Tamil people through cinema.
Megastar Chiranjeevi also remembered Bharathiraja as one of Indian cinema’s greatest storytellers. He praised the filmmaker for capturing the beauty of rural life, human relationships and emotions through his films.
Recalling his own experience of working with Bharathiraja in Aradhana, Chiranjeevi said the director’s passion, simplicity and dedication left a lasting impact on him.
Known affectionately as “Iyakkunar Imayam” (The Peak of Directors), Bharathiraja revolutionised Tamil cinema by taking filmmaking beyond studio walls and bringing authentic rural narratives to audiences across India.
With full State honours announced for his final journey and tributes pouring in from political leaders, actors, filmmakers and fans, Bharathiraja’s legacy as a pioneer of Indian cinema will continue to inspire generations.
