West Bengal Launches Free Bus Travel for Women From June 1: Check Eligibility, Documents Required and How the Scheme Works

In a major welfare initiative aimed at improving mobility and financial accessibility for women, the West Bengal government has officially launched free bus travel for women across the state from June 1, 2026.

The scheme allows women passengers to travel free of cost on all state-run buses operating on both short-distance and long-distance routes. The initiative is expected to benefit lakhs of women commuters, including students, working professionals, homemakers and senior citizens.

How the Scheme Works

As the scheme begins, women passengers must carry a valid identity document to establish their eligibility. Bus conductors will verify the documents and issue a “zero-value ticket” instead of collecting fare.

The Transport Department has instructed bus staff to continue this document-based verification process until a dedicated beneficiary smart card system becomes operational.

Documents Accepted

Women passengers can avail of free travel by carrying any one of the following documents:

  • Aadhaar Card
  • Voter Identity Card (EPIC)
  • PAN Card
  • Passport
  • Driving Licence
  • Ayushman Bharat Health Card
  • Grameen Rozgar Guarantee Card
  • Pension Documents with Photograph
  • Government-issued Service Identity Card
  • Educational Institution Identity Card
  • Other authorised identity documents issued by the West Bengal Government

Smart Card System Coming Soon

The state government is also working on introducing digital smart cards for beneficiaries. These cards are expected to include the holder’s photograph and a QR code for easy verification.

According to reports, eligible women will be able to apply for these smart cards through designated administrative offices such as Block Development Officer (BDO) and Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) offices.

Once rolled out, the smart cards will become the primary mode of verification for free travel on state-run buses.

A Major Boost for Women Commuters

The initiative is expected to reduce transportation expenses for women while encouraging greater participation in education, employment and social activities. Officials believe the scheme will improve accessibility and provide much-needed financial relief to women who rely on public transport daily.

With the scheme now in effect across West Bengal, thousands of women commuters have already begun benefiting from free travel on government-operated bus services.
