Dubare Jumbo Fight: Elephant Marthanda Dies After Violent Clash That Killed Tourist

A tragic incident at Karnataka’s famous Dubare Elephant Camp in Kodagu has taken another heartbreaking turn after elephant Marthanda died a day after a violent clash with another elephant that had already claimed the life of a tourist.

According to reports, Marthanda suffered severe injuries to its head, ears and back during the confrontation with fellow elephant Kanjan at the Dubare Elephant Camp. Despite treatment efforts, the injured elephant succumbed to its wounds on Tuesday, triggering sadness among wildlife staff, visitors and elephant lovers across the state.

The clash had earlier resulted in the death of a tourist, raising serious concerns about safety measures and elephant management protocols at the popular tourist destination. The incident reportedly occurred when the two elephants became aggressive during camp activity, leading to chaos and panic among visitors and handlers.

Forest officials and veterinary teams were immediately rushed to the spot after the confrontation. Marthanda was placed under observation and given medical treatment for multiple injuries sustained during the fight. However, officials later confirmed that the elephant could not survive the trauma.

Following the tragic development, authorities have reportedly barred elephant Kanjan from participating in future Mysuru Dasara jumbo duties. The Mysuru Dasara elephant procession is one of Karnataka’s most celebrated cultural traditions, and elephants selected for the event usually undergo extensive training and supervision.

The Dubare Elephant Camp, located in Kodagu district, is one of Karnataka’s well-known eco-tourism destinations where visitors can observe and interact with trained elephants under supervision. The camp has long been associated with elephant care, training and conservation activities managed by the Karnataka Forest Department.

The incident has now sparked discussions about animal stress, safety management and the challenges involved in handling captive elephants, especially during tourist interactions and ceremonial preparations.

Authorities are expected to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident while reviewing safety protocols for both visitors and camp staff to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
