AR Rahman Honoured In Toronto As Rangreza Wins Hearts With Global Sufi Symphony

Oscar-winning composer A. R. Rahman has once again brought global recognition to Indian music after receiving a special honour in Toronto following the unveiling of his latest composition, Rangreza.

Rahman shared the news on social media along with photographs from the event, expressing gratitude to the city and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow for the warm reception. “Thank you Toronto for this wonderful honour. It was such a pleasure to meet you Olivia Chow. See you all tomorrow,” Rahman wrote.

In her message to the composer, Mayor Olivia Chow praised Rahman’s immense contribution to music and cultural unity. She highlighted how his music continues to connect communities across Toronto and beyond, describing his work as meaningful and inspiring.

The recognition came after the unveiling of Rangreza, a newly commissioned Sufi-inspired orchestral composition created by Rahman along with composer Rushil Ranjan. The composition blends Indian spiritual traditions with Western classical arrangements, creating a unique global musical experience.

The grand performance featured the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and London Voices, with acclaimed vocalist Abi Sampa lending her voice to the production. The composition was premiered at the iconic Royal Albert Hall as part of a three-night orchestral showcase celebrating cross-cultural music collaborations.

Over the decades, Rahman has continuously expanded the boundaries of Indian music on international platforms. From transforming Indian film music with classics like Roja to winning Academy Awards for Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman has remained one of the most influential global music figures from India.

Despite his international projects, Rahman continues to stay deeply connected to Indian cinema. His recent work includes Tere Ishk Mein directed by Aanand L Rai and starring Dhanush.

His upcoming lineup also includes Ramayana: Part 1, Ramayana: Part 2, Genie, Peddi starring Ram Charan, Moon Walk featuring Prabhu Deva, and an untitled film by Mani Ratnam starring Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi.

More than three decades into his legendary career, Rahman continues to evolve as a composer, performer and cultural ambassador, taking Indian music to some of the world’s biggest stages while inspiring audiences across generations.
